Virginia=Win; North Carolina=Landslide

simple guide

Here is a handy dandy guide to watching election night. The East Coast states will report first. If John McCain is going to win, then he will win Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. And then it will take the rest of the night to figure out if he still has enough electoral votes. Obama's victory could be a lot easier to figure out.

If Obama wins Virginia - it's over. That simple. He is comfortably ahead in all of the blue states that John Kerry won in 2004. He is very likely to win all of those. He is also comfortably ahead in Iowa and New Mexico. So, that means all he has to do to get an electoral majority is win Virginia, or Ohio, or Florida, or Colorado. Any of them will do. If McCain wins three out of the four, he still loses.

We can know by 4pm PST when the polls close in Virginia. They can call it on the exit polling data, then we just assume Barack picks up all the Kerry states plus Iowa which he's had a slam dunk lead in since the caucuses.

Bam! That's 272 EVs in the can. Fuck Ohio, fuck Florida.

"Could" being the operative word here.

Indiana and Kentucky are typically the first states called due to early poll closing. Kentucky will go for McCain but Indiana is still considered close. I suspect it will probably go narrowly for McCain with most of the state red except for the northwestern Chicago area counties and the city of Indianapolis, but if Indiana goes for Obama we're looking at a major landslide. But as 1 and 2 point out, Virginia is where the fat lady will start singing.

OMG!! Virginia could sway something...

Here's hoping we have *GOOD* news tomorrow. I guarantee the Obama campaign workers have worked their asses off.

McCain negative ads are flying, though. "Be scared. Be Very Scared. If you're not, the bad black man will put his terrorist pals in charge. Oh, yeah - and take all your money, too."

We don't have to try to get along with these ass-holes for a week or so. Right??

By 6PM tomorrow I wonder if I'll have any fingernails left...

Got a bottle of bubbly in my fridge - hope it will be for celebration rather than drowning my sorrows!

@8 & @9: I recommend consulting your medicine cabinet or your nearest medicated friend. After a day of pretty severe election related anxiety (plus a dash of work related) I hit the couch and popped a xanny bar about 20 minutes ago. Its the best I've felt in weeks. Just make sure you save couple on the off chance that the world effectively ends tomorrow evening!

My plan for tonight is simple: put away laundry, then take the magic bullet of two benadryl + a beer + Sleepytime Extra tea. Read for classes until I fall asleep. Wake up panicky in the morning and give myself two hours to walk across the street and drop our absentee ballots at our polling places. Go to work and try to figure out how to check polling #s (this will probably involve obsessive texting of friends). Get off work at 5, haul ass to the Showbox.

It's a good thing I trimmed all my fingernails down earlier this week, they'd be gone by tomorrow.

I'm going to be reliving tomorrow for many years (but in a very different way than how I relive 2000).

I believe my grandchildren will ask me what the day was like.
