I totally stopped buying Diet Coke at the convenience store next to my work on Eastlake Ave because the caps ALWAYS smell! I thought maybe the refrigerator at the store wasn't clean, but Coke Zero from the same store is no problem. To me it smells more like really rank mildew rather than BO, which makes me think there is some kind of sanitation issue at the local plant. It really is quite disgusting to almost ingest that. I've since quit my Diet/Zero Coke addiction.

I don't know, but I figured out that Coke Zero = Diet Coke for men.

Kinda like this but more subtle: http://www.alde.com/anime/pocky1.jpg

@2: I always thought Diet Coke was Tab for men.

TAB is Tab for men; well, for me at least. My heart will always belong to that metallic taste. I wish I could find it around here. It's even better than Fresca.

Fuck Coke Zero. Diet Coke and aspartame for life! Splenda wants to pretend it's sugar, aspartame doesn't offer any illusions.

@7 Tab has an energy drink now, I've seen it around town. Tastes pretty much the same just, ya know, roided out. As for Fresca I seem to remember reading somewhere that Coca-Cola invented it for the German market during the 30's so as not to have Coke itself assosiated with the Nazi while still making money off of them.
@7 why is it that RC reminds me of GNR, mall bangs and Shelton?

As someone who drinks about 6 cans a day, I have also noticed that the caps of bottled Diet Coke sometimes smell like mildew.

This is one of the many reasons I'm going to try quitting for New Years.

I think it has to do with nasty, smelly plasticizers. I never buy sodas in plastic bottles - whenever I have a rare indulgence it is out of a can. When my kids want me to buy them a plastic trinket I give it a smell test. A lot of the stretchy, squishy, brightly colored plastic toys smell oily and awful. Coincidentally lots of it is made right in China.

Don't drink diet-anything but I have gotten a few bottled beers at a local bar here in Philly that smelled like BO. The beer itself wasn't skunky, it was definitely the bottles. They smelled like nasty fetid underarm stench. Needless to say I order draught beers only at that bar now. Definitely the kind of place that probably stores cases of beverages in a dark dirty damp basement for a while before serving. I bet it's mildew.

My co-worker drinks at least 12 Coke Zeros in work day. Not to mention the cans he drinks at home. He's totally addicted, tried to quit, but couldn't do it. People started giving him Coke Zero as gifts, SCARY! The best part is he's at least 100 lbs over weight.

I remember discussing Coke Zero in marketing class a while back. It is Coke's attempt at capturing the young male market who thinks the term diet has feminine connotations.

But it begs the question: How fragile must one's masculinity be when one is afraid of being seen with a Diet Coke?

Jessica #8: Coke Zero is also sweetened with Aspartame. The only Coke product that uses Splenda is Diet Coke w/ Splenda (it has a different label).

Coke Zero's screw-tops always smell like girl-crotch to me. Not in a nasty you-need-to-wash way, just the way girls smell in a clean-cooch context. It freaked me the fuck out the first time it happened, but... I really like Coke Zero, so I got used to smelling lady-bits while drinking it? That sounds way worse when I type it out.

This only happens to me when drinking the 20-oz bottles, not from 2-liters or the little 12-oz mini-bottles. (Or else it used to happen and doesn't anymore, since I've switched from the individually-sold 20-oz to the 8-pack 12-oz bottles.)

#22, that scent in the plastic cap is part of the marketing to young males. It just happens that not everyone has the same reaction to the scent. For some folks, it is a "nice" smell, for others BO.
Most of the smells of our food are added after processing so we eat them. Read or see Fast Food Nation and you'll understand.

I noticed this same smell on a bottle I purchased last week. I drink A LOT of Diet Coke, and this was the first time I had ever noticed it. I attribute it to the delivery dude.

"It is Coke's attempt at capturing the young male market who thinks the term diet has feminine connotations."

Maybe, but in reality it captures the market that wants to drink a low-calorie pop but thinks Diet Coke tastes like pure, unadulterated ASS. Which it does. Coke Zero tastes reasonably like real Coke, and Diet Coke is like Windex in a can.

Soda is a TREAT, not a food group, people. Drink it once in a while. If you are drinking it all day long with every meal, remind yourself what it would look like if you were drinking beer all day long with every meal. And then don't ask yourself why you are fat.

And if you are about to tell me that aspartame has no calories so it's ok, I call bullshit. Aspartame makes your body store fat, calories or no.

I prefer Japanese roasted green tea, myself.

But one wonders if it might have something to do with the local water supply due to flooding.
