Polls, Polls, Polls

posted by on November 3 at 10:45 AM

After all the emotional ups and downs it’s given our readers over the last few months, here is the final Gallup tracking poll, traditional-model edition (the new model produces exactly the same result).

Other national polls are showing the same thing:

FOX NEWS: Obama 50, McCain 43.

MARIST COLLEGE: Obama 53, McCain 44.

NBC/WSJ: Obama 51, McCain 43.

But, as I’ve been trying to remind people all along: the national polls matter a lot less than the state polls. Those, as almost always, are looking very good for Obama.

i feel like i'm about to take the field for a really important game. choose whatever sport you prefer. i'm nervous and can't stop visualizing what's gonna happen. i've never felt this way before an election, it's weird.

but it's also very exciting.

@4: I've been thinking about it in terms of my favorite sports team for weeks. It's the exact same anxiety, except amplified by about a thousand because this actually matters.

Well-put, Abby @6. I've had the same kinda sports fan anxiety, including the "except amplified by about a thousand because this actually matters."

Fox News is in the tank for Obama. Fucking elite liberal, er... It's like rats fleeing the good ship McCain.

@3 Good point. And where's the cutoff? Am I giving or receiving? I have so many questions for our new socialist overlords. Can I stop working immediately on the 20th? If so, when can I expect my first "redistribution"? Also, can I choose whom it's "redistributed" from? That would be awesome.

Wow, the histogram on 538 really scattered!

@3 - we already have Socialists in the White House.

I think you meant "Does America retake the White House from the Socialist Republicans right after, or do we have to wait until January 20, 2009?"

@6 i don't know why but i have the same feeling i get when i play in a game myself, like my own performance is at stake. but, yeah, it is like your favorite football team in the superbowl too. i think the difference might be that deep down i know that the superbowl doesn't really matter whereas this election strikes me more personally.

@11, don't say things like that on Slog without warning someone first. I had to go check, because I thought when you said exploded, something really horrible happened. I'm a nervous, cautiously hopeful Dem who won't get any sleep until Wednesday night.

On the fivethirty histogram... I suppose Golob will be worried by the red spike at about 269 electoral votes for Obama. But, I still think 3.7% is 3.7% regardless of whether there is a spike.

I've bitten my finger nails to the nub already. Let's get this over with.
