The urban archipelago concept has been truly helpful to me in maintaining sanity over the past 4 years.

Last night, when the street parties kicked off, I wondered if they were happening everywhere. I hoped so. It's really fun to see all of the pics and videos today of people feeling the exact same thing in city after city after city. I know lots of small-town Dems were having the same emotional reaction, but it sucks for them that they didn't get to have it in giant-freaking-the-fuck-out throngs of fellow humanity.

Hmmm. One of the things that was so exciting to me about last night was the partial breakdown of the traditional red state/blue state, Urban Archipelago, �fuck the south�-type frameworks (what with Florida, Virgina, Indiana, etc.).

Maybe the division is still there and I just don't care as much because Obama won, but last night it certainly felt a little bit more like we were the �United States of America� as Obama says.

I remember reading that cover story four years ago in the Portland Mercury, when I happened to be in Oregon on vacation, and taking some solace in it. (I live -- and vote -- in South Florida, a fact of which, today at least, I don't have to be ashamed.) Wow, has it been a long four years. And yet, here we finally are.
