Street parties erupt in New York, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Philadelphia. Who won last night? The Urban Archipelago won, the United Cities of America.

I'm not sure how, but people were shooting off some serious fireworks in DC.

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah! Oh man, I'm so happy. Last night was surreal, and I felt an odd sensation as an eight-year-old feeling of total wrongness broke inside me, and suddenly I lived in a world that makes sense again. So long cowboy, and don't let the entire world hit you on the ass on your way out. Or maybe do, you evil evil monkey. And hello Mr. Obama, you elegant, fantastic 21st century new human type person, you.

The urban archipelago concept has been truly helpful to me in maintaining sanity over the past 4 years.

Last night, when the street parties kicked off, I wondered if they were happening everywhere. I hoped so. It's really fun to see all of the pics and videos today of people feeling the exact same thing in city after city after city. I know lots of small-town Dems were having the same emotional reaction, but it sucks for them that they didn't get to have it in giant-freaking-the-fuck-out throngs of fellow humanity.

Dan, did you check out the NY Times interactive map? Half of Washington State voted for Obama, not just King County.

I'm surprised someone hasn't already spliced these differing celebrations into a public orgasm like at the end of "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi".

Though Knoxville, TN is still a submerged seamount in the archipelago, the celebration at my bar was the most special moment for me in years.

Hmmm. One of the things that was so exciting to me about last night was the partial breakdown of the traditional red state/blue state, Urban Archipelago, “fuck the south”-type frameworks (what with Florida, Virgina, Indiana, etc.).

Maybe the division is still there and I just don't care as much because Obama won, but last night it certainly felt a little bit more like we were the “United States of America” as Obama says.

Last night was the biggest outpouring of pure joy I've ever seen. The years of fucking heartache, the anxiety, just washed away in one instant.

there is no tradition Julie, unless 8 years for some states, 16 for others, 24 yet for others is tradition.

Traditional was the wrong word. How about the red state/blue state, Urban Archipelago, fuck-the-south, United States of Canada “narratives of the past 8 years”.

This cartogram:

shows that if the urban archipelago still exists, it's a series of islands in a shrinking inland sea, with a solidly blue mainland.

Still my fave cover as well, andI have the gloosy of it that I won at the first trivia night framed up on my wall.

If I thought there was a chance I would ask Savage and other staffers to sign it.

I remember reading that cover story four years ago in the Portland Mercury, when I happened to be in Oregon on vacation, and taking some solace in it. (I live -- and vote -- in South Florida, a fact of which, today at least, I don't have to be ashamed.) Wow, has it been a long four years. And yet, here we finally are.

The urban archipelago is the place with fake Americans, where nobody loves their country.

Nutzy Barbie says that, so it must be true.

Hey John Bailo! I can't wait 'til I can buy crack with welfare money siphoned off of your hard work!
