Thanks for the pitches, Scott and Glen, but the polygamy angle is something of a dead end, as only the even-more-loony-tunes Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints partakes of it anymore.

But the Mitt pitch: bingo.

Can't think of a slogan, but it seems like a cult that got kicked out of Illinois back in the nineteenth century because of their deviant sexual practices might be a little more cautious about casting stones.

The Mormons are pushing anti-gay laws to get credibility from the larger Christian establishment. Polygamy is the LDS Church's greatest PR disaster, so what better way to distance themselves from it and get respect from other evangelical nutjobs than to mandate "traditional" marriage for everyone?

Mitt Romney probably would have run against Barack Obama except many Christians had a problem with his religion. The more respect they get from Protestants and Catholics, the more money and power they get.

I think bringing attention to their polygamist roots might be a good idea to help make their plan backfire...

maybe a "Render unto Ceasar the things that are Ceasars"...could work here not really sure

I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread but:

Hi Sloggers,

I'm Katherine the Utah Democrat's husband:
We took the whole fam (4 kids: yes we were were raised Mormon) to the protest tonight. It was fabulous. Very much a party atmosphere, with people of all stripes. According to the local Fox affiliate, 2000 people were there. (I think there might have been more.)

There were some haters trying to make a counter-protest, but they were few and seemed to disappear after an hour or so. (Weirdly, some of them were the regular evangelical anti-Mormon nutjobs who haunt Temple Square. Politics makes strange bedfellows I suppose.)
There were also lots of well-behaved cops around.

Here were some of the slogans we went with:

You can have my gay marriage when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Traditional marriage? Let's ask Brigham Young.

$25 million wasted on hate and fear.

Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam, why don't you?

Love is always the answer.

Don't fear love. Fear is the enemy.

Marriage for all.

... and maybe one or two I don't recall now.

Some slogans we saw there that were good:

When do we get to vote on your marriage? (My favorite)

America is not a theocracy.

Keep your Doctrine out of our Covenants. (You may not get this if you're not familiar with mormon scripture.)

Anyway, thanks for the ideas. Maybe Katherine will write a longer report later if anyone is interested.

Peace out, fellow liberals.

We do not believe it just to mingle religious influence with civil government, whereby one religious society is fostered and another proscribed in its spiritual privileges, and the individual rights of its members, as citizens, denied.

Why don't you all realize that the proposition passed. It wasn't just the mormons who voted for it!!!! I'm not a mormon but I do think they had the right to vote, even though it upsets me also this is not the way to handle it. I'm sorry you are so upset and angry but why don't you do something productive and don't just bully the people who were for it to pass. All you are teaching your children and others around you is that you are mean, narrow minded, bullies, who want to scare the mormons into voting a different way, which by the way they won't. You aren't going to do any good, unless you think getting arrested, or killing someone, or getting yourself killed is good. Nothing else is going to come out of this.

Posted by Patrick | November 8, 2008 7:22 AM
105

I personally am not against gays in any way. I think they have the right to live their lives their own way. But that doesn't mean I think they should be married. I feel that they can have civil marriages. But marriage is between a man and a woman. I think they have the right to go against that and try to get laws passed. But for now as was proven more people in the U.S. feel the same way I do. If there is a time that people all feel differently then I would be ok with it and let it go. But going against and protesting one church is not right, it's being a bully and just trying to scare them. All that is going to come out of this is someone getting killed.

Posted by Patrick | November 8, 2008 7:32 AM
106

@Patrick: No, the reason for attacking the LDS church is that they funneled millions of dollars into changing the way a person that may not believe the same views can live their life. The LDS church scared the crap out of people with their "say yes to prop 8" things, and they probably forced many people to vote that way.

Patrick:

don't you get it? attitudes like the ones the mormons just spent $25 million promoting have already gotten alot of people killed, a lot of gay people killed! It's lame to say its okay for us to hate on you because we're only following (our own bizarre interpretation of) god's will but it's not okay for you to hate us back.

Can you please tell me what is so special about the love of a man and a woman? I just don't get it. Out of all the dozens of kinds of emotional relationships humans can have, whay is that one so special that it should get to have all the financial, legal, insurance, etc., benefits?

It really sounds like you need the affirmation of special rights before you can believe your (hetero) love is real.

I think its neat that heterosexual sex can lead to babies and all, but where does that mean that you get to lord over all other people because you happened to be born heterosexual?

Following that logic - that marriage rights and benefits are special rights for people born heterosexually-orient{d - then marriage should be denied for hetero couples who are infertile or who choose never to have kids.

Hetero couples fuck because it feels good and a lot of them don't think about the having babies part until later. Nature made fucking feel so good to make sure that that - for hetero couples at least - some babies would get born, because in general humans are too dumb to have procreated otherwise.

So I ask you again: what so special about love between aman and a woman that it should get these special rights and bebfits more than anyone else? Gay men and lesbians can have sex with the opposite sex, there are lots of gay dads and lesbian moms who were in hetero marriages and have had children. So the special rights aren't about proceation because gay men and lesbians have and can have hetero sex to procreate if they need to. Its just nature designed us to love and want to fuck people of our own sex the same way nature designed you and/or heteros to love and fuck opposit sex (and the bis to love and fuck all kinds of people).

There's no way you can say the love between a man and woman isomehow so special that only they deserve to have a bunch of special rights and benefits without being that you think you're better than all other people.

'Pay Lay Ale'
Supposed to scare'em.

'Take your magic underwear and fuck yourselves straight to hell'
It was either that or a molotov cocktail to the foyer.

'Tax the church'
Hey, that $700 billion bailout isn't going to pay for itself.

'Mormon=Liar'
'Mormon=Hater'
'Mormon=Crazy'
'Mormon=Bigot'
Take your pick.

'Separate your church from my state'
Seems to be the winner here.

I was watching this race with interest, as an ex-pat from WA and CA now living in the UK, I'm legally bound to another man where it's NO BIG DEAL. I don't understand why some people are so threatened by the idea of two people committing themselves to each other. Who gives a crap what their genitals look like? I've been saying this for years now: If marriage is a legal agreement, then the church has no more place in defining or framing it than any other contract; whereas, if marriage is a religious institution, then laws shall not impede on the right to freedom of religion (First Amendment to the Constitution, anyone?). Here in the UK, we have a Human Rights Act, and perhaps the US should stop living in the 18th Century and join us in the 21st.

I agree that it was the voters of CA that chose this again (remember 2000? Proposition 22?) However, I'm blaming the LDS for manipulating people into voting against something that they may support in principle but got scared into voting against.

Keep the light shining bright, stay angry, stay focussed, but lose the hate...

I think protest is ok but more california gays and their families and friends and children getting involved and voting will be even better. Hopefully now they are awake and staying vigilant to do so. Simply because when the vote is used to discriminate against the civil rights of a minority it is abused. I could reference legislation from germany during world war II as examples, but I want to keep this brief. I do think relentless protest is a fair and called for duty of citizens who understand the value and neccesity of equality and fighting unjust laws. I would have gladly said live and let live in a world where mormons had to deal with the fact that gay mariages exist and yes may even be included in books, but mormons are free to teach their child whatever religious perspective they have on the matter. They also get the bonus of Celestial Marriage while the rest of us poor mortals are limited till death us do part. But this repectful approach is not what occurred, instead they knowingly or unknowingly, (because some don't get out much)entered the living rooms of their neighbors saying their rights superseded those of their fellow citizens and in effect canceling and attempting to revoke their neighbors marriages. Then the church leadership's most appalling act was the nerve to press release that no hostility was intended. This would sort of be like Saying to Jews...we're sorry but since you don'r believe like we do we think it would be better for the children if we restricted your rights. That kind of sentiment ended badly and they called it the Holocaust. Conversly were it a California amendment to limit gross overpopulation by restricting the number of births mormon families could have for the good of the children and society as a whole... Would that be ok to vote for ? The answer should be no. Since the result of this legistaltion is indeed more than hostile and intolerant it is a gross injustice that must not stand. We may take a lesson from MLK Jr though and the progress made in other civil rights battles by virtue of the philosophy of Non-violent protest. We should channel anger into positive action. I hope the California Supreme court grows a pair invalidates Prop 8 on the grounds that it revises fundamental tenets of the California Constitution on equality for at least 18,000 couples and for those countless not yet married. As such prop 8 is invalid under existing California law. My suggested slogan is in the sentiment of my favorite US supreme court justice. Thurgood
"Your Rights Stop at MY Nose"
God Bless Activist Judges who make unpopular decisions overturning unjust laws...Blacks and women can vote and are entitled to attend the same schools and even serve their country in the military.Gosh how did we ever survive?

I am simply amqzed that we have these dazed posters here defending the LDS. Gays and Lesbians are not infallable. We make mistakes and we have emotions. It is mt intention to protest the Mormon scum loudly and to give them the rage and venom they deserve. If they are scared, good. They should be scared. They should be quaking in their self-righteous boots.

So often, gays get smacked down by religious groups telling us that they don't wabnt us pusghing our sex lives under their noses. We been told to keep our sex lifes private, because you (MORMON) do not want to see it.

The role has been reversed. Gays have be quietly pursuing their rights through the the court systems - and we are winning. So, this gutter relion of Mormon decides that THEY know what's best for the country and short-circuit our legal victories.

It is my position, and the position of many others that I know, that Mormons shall reap what they have sown. The preached hate and they are going to get hate. They judged us and they are going to be judged. They are trying to destroy us and our families. We will destroy them. DESTROY THEM.

Let them call up a counter protest. Let them get one of their guttersnipe members to get up in my face. He will never, ever have an opportunity to talk again.

This is the breaking point for me. I'm coming and my friends are coming. It is time to demonstrate that we are not all stereotypes like you see on TV or prancing about on a stupid Gay Pride float.

We are being threatened - yet again - this time we'll fight back in ways not typically associated with the Gay & Lesbian Community. We are going to run them out of NYC - in fear. What they did is the tipping point. A church is going after me with millions. Those gleaming church walls will not protect them.

Get angry. Get Real. These are the people who should experience your rage, your hostility, and you vengeance. We must steel ourselves to the fact that these are repulsive human beings unworthy of compassion.

I am a mormon and I do not hate gays or lesbians. I do however believe that marriage is ordained of God and should only be between a man and a woman. This does not equate to hate. I understand why you want to believe that Mormon's hate gays and lesbians. I imagine that it is easier to spew hatred toward mormon's if one really believes that ormon's in fact hate them. Well we don't. In fact, I do not know a mormon who hates anyone because of their sexual orientation. I that a person can love another while choosing to subscribe to different beliefs. I am sorry if you feel my beliefs are wrong. I maintain that I have as much a right to believe the way I do as you have a right to believe the way you do. Diversity of opinions makes this country great. I am appalled by such things as gay bashing, and I would certainly be dismayed to see mormon bashing become the accepted practice among the very group that has been on the receiving end of such things. I am sorry to see that many here and elsewhere appear to be advocating that very thing. Peace to you and God Bless.

As a member of this nation, mormon or not, I have the RIGHT to protest and use my resources to protect things I feel is important. Do you really think this is the only church that was protesting your belief, or do you find it the easiest target to yell at. if you did not spend so much money on other things, you could have had the same amount of ads on TV about your belief in what you stand for. Get a grip, God won and you lost. I have just as much of a right to post my beliefs and make my points known. Get over it. Think about this, how many disasters and poor have the Gay and Lesbian organizations supported. How many storm and earthquake disasters have YOU gone to putting your life on hold to help others? Think about all the poor and needy that will be going without because you want to tear down an organization that has a group of people that happen to disagree with you. Do you really want to do that? If you do, then you are very shallow and self centered.

I know the point you're trying to make is about hate, but let's stop right there. Please remember that whether you think marriage is "ordained of God" or "ordained of a magic snake" it makes no sense to write laws based on that belief. In this country we're not supposed to write one person's (or many people's) mythological beliefs into law.

I do not know a mormon who hates anyone because of their sexual orientation.

Got it. No hate, just the desire to prevent people from marrying each other. Very loving of you.

I maintain that I have as much a right to believe the way I do as you have a right to believe the way you do.

I agree. However, people are now writing your and their bigoted beliefs -- those which you have every right to hold -- into law. That's bad.
