The 3rd option would be gold. The story of the Stooges is an amazing story. A bunch of guys working their asses off on the stage breaks through to pop culture... multiple deaths and tragedies on the way. Moe breaking down in tears in the middle of train stations.... Making it into a slapstick comedy would be a beautiful tribute.

Perhaps ONE or two big names, but leave the rest to the wings. Then people stop hyperventilating about what they might do and can judge the movie on the original acting chops not someone's usual schtick slightly altered to stereotype.

Also, I think it would be super fabulous if they could get a strong dramatic actor into at least one of the roles (but has comedic chops, obviously).
