It’s Like Your Least Favorite Thing Meets Your Other Least Favorite Thing!

posted by on November 11 at 11:30 AM

In case you hadn’t heard, the Farrelly brothers will be directing a Three Stooges movie. I await their casting decisions with bated breath.

Via Variety:

MGM has engaged Peter and Bobby Farrelly to renew their quest to channel the comic mayhem of the Three Stooges into a contemporary comedy.

The MGM news marks a homecoming for both the Stooges as well as the Farrellys, who spent five years trying to make the Stooges movie at Warner Bros.

The studio has staked out a Nov. 20, 2009 release date on the film.

That puts the Stooges film up against the Robert Downey Jr. starrer Sherlock Holmes, and the animated film Planet 51. Disney has scheduled the male-skewing comedy Old Dogs with John Travolta for Nov. 25.

Which led me to this exchange on the imdb message board:

Moe: Jim Carrey or Mike Myers
Larry: Jeff Daniels
Curly: Jack Black
Shemp: James Gandolfini

One of the stooge’s love interest: Debra Messing

JACK BLACK WOULD MAKE A HORRIBLE CURLY, HE REALLY ISN’T THAT FUNNY. KEVIN JAMES WOULD COMPLETELY REINVENT CURLY!
I hope you die in a fire.

More details about the deadly fire, the funniness of Jack Black, and how much I don’t want to see “the male-skewing comedy Old Dogs with John Travolta” as they become available.

I'm pretty sure that Paul Ben-Victor already perfected Moe.

Speaking of which, can anyone tell me the difference between and Robert Davi?

@myself Oh, you mean between PAUL BEN-VICTOR and Robert Davi? Yes, that is what I meant. Thank you. That is all.

Close - bump Myers to Larry, Daniels *could be* Curly, especially since Jack Black is as funny as an empty rain gauge to a drought. Gandolfini would be a great Shemp. Then just hire an adult baby to play Curly Joe.

This excites. 21st Century Moe could shove 1) a Roomba up Larry's ass and 2) Pocky up Curly's pee-hole.

Jack Black is PURE COMIC GENIUS, however, it always work to just stick stars in movies and hope it works.

Holy shit.

Late November 2009 sounds like a good time to avoid movie theaters in general.

Could Hollywood please go on strike again?

P.S. Jack Black was never funny and is the opposite of talented

@7:

Seriously.

An open letter to Jack Black:

Please stop.

However, if you're really in the Tenacious D mindset for this one, why not Kyle Gass for Curly? He's got the look, at least.

Is this a re-make of a Stooges movie, or is this a movie about the Stooges? Or is it a Stooge-style comedy about the Stooges?

The 3rd option would be gold. The story of the Stooges is an amazing story. A bunch of guys working their asses off on the stage breaks through to pop culture... multiple deaths and tragedies on the way. Moe breaking down in tears in the middle of train stations.... Making it into a slapstick comedy would be a beautiful tribute.

@Meagan:

If you are watching a movie on HBO, it's Robert Davi. If you are watching HBO's original programming, it's Paul Ben-Victor.

And while Davi was in The Goonies and Die Hard, Ben-Victor was on The Wire, so he wins.

As to the actual content of this post, "I hope you die in a fire" is never not funny.

Hmm, I'm a bigger fan of unknowns or lesser knowns filling in on these bloated projects. Perhaps ONE or two big names, but leave the rest to the wings. Then people stop hyperventilating about what they might do and can judge the movie on the original acting chops not someone's usual schtick slightly altered to stereotype.

Also, I think it would be super fabulous if they could get a strong dramatic actor into at least one of the roles (but has comedic chops, obviously).
Like what they did in Stuck on You.

This project is doomed to failure. The stooges worked because they were a long-lasting ensemble. The actors mooted are too self-centered for this to work.

Bellevue, that correlates directly with Jack Black's (comedy) film career being the in thing for him to do.
