My husband left for a trip to France yesterday for work, and he was really excited to be able to go there and not be embarrassed to be American. I'll be really interested to hear whether people talk to him about the election and what they say...

I think you misinterpreted this. The Russian woman is probably happy California’s Prop 8 passed.

@3, I liked Kole's story, too, except for one line:

"despite holding America's feet to the fire, the rest of the world is rooting for it and wants it to lead and succeed."

This is the kind of starry-eyed American narcissism that drives other countries nuts and damages the goodwill we want to feel for you right now. With this election, Americans have been given a great chance to remake themselves in the eyes of the world. To tell yourselves that we want you to "lead" us is naive and presumptuous, and a step backwards.
