How did your map come up with 544 electoral votes?

realclearpolitics is making me nervous today. The national polls look good for Obama, but McCain seems to be making progress in important states. :queasy:

@2, but can you make a kitty cat face?

There's almost no chance for McCain, based on the map. If Obama wins all the solid Obama states and Virginia it's over. Or if he wins Pennsylvania, it's over. Or if he wins Fl.

Do not worry! We'll be singing hail to Pres. Obama by 4:30 PST tomorrow.

Have fun!

North Carolina: not a goddamn chance. Lipstick or no, pigs are not birds, and until the FAA certifies them they are not flightworthy.

Ditto VA, frankly. Go look back at the 2004 results: Kerry over-polled consistently by 2-4 points in those states.

Obama will probably win, but this is going to be much, much closer than anyone expects.

too optomistic: mccain will take north caroline, and either ohio, or florida, or both.

and still lose.

353+191=544

There are only 538 electoral votes.

Your map doesn't show NE-02, which Obama has a shot of winning and picking up 1 extra EV.

The number should be 353-185. That site must be buggy. Try 270towin.com

@3 et al: Yeah, don't know what was up with that. Made a new map and now it all adds up. Thanks.

What's up with Nevada? Hasn't that state been Red for the last several elections? Now all of a sudden pollsters are saying Blue. I will be happy if it does vote Blue this time around.

I would think that after the disaster that was Katrina, LA would've gone Blue and not still be in the Red.

I can't do it. Once I give up a shed of optimism for bracing-myself realism it sets off a chain reaction of red that it far too painful. We need new colors.

#14, Lousiana had a Democratic governor at the time that also seemed to take a lot of the blame, so I think it was kind of a wash. Ahem.

I think he'll take Missouri and maybe Indiana...Georgia will be very close. North Dakota would not surprise me.

Alaska and Arizona would be puddin' on the cake...

Just color it More Blue.

It's a Blue Tidal Wave, and it's sweeping America clean - even David Brooks agrees with me on that one.

I keep trying to make a map with Texas removed, but it won't work. Stupid frickin' software.

I'm saying Montana is gonna go blue. Red for Missouri and Indiana...and Florida...and NC.

Blue for VA, OH, CO, MN, NV...enough to put Obama over the top.

The best version of the map has America giving the Red Socialist Republicans the finger.

Yeah.

I'm being cautious and giving Florida and North Carolina, but not Ohio, to McCain. Obama 311. But I would not be surprised about any result between 278 and 395. Fingers crossed that I'm not being optimistic.

mini prediction: Nebraska will split its electoral vote 4/1.
