Gregoire v. Rossi: An Intervention

posted by on November 4 at 8:37 AM

“Help” writes in comments

I need help! My husband told me this morning he wants to vote Obama-Rossi! I need information to show him this is a terrible idea. I already brought up the choice issue, but he doesn’t think the governor has any control over that. Any ideas?

Help should tell her husband that governor’s offices are launching pads to national offices, where Rossi would have an impact on choice issues. Also, access to birth control, morning-after pills, fundy pharmacists denying women medication, sex education—these are all “choice issues” that the governor DOES have control over.

Got some advice for Help’s husband? Toss it up in comments and Help will make sure her husband reads it.

Roads vs Transit!

The governor will have a huge impact on the direction of regional transit, which will have a huge impact on the shape of our approach to community building, which in turn affects how our activities impact the environment.

Gregoire = Better regional transit, more efficient communities and less environmental impact.

Rossi = More roads, more traffic, more sprawl, more environmental damage.

DTMFA. Anyone who is dumb enough to vote for the used-car salesman will end up doing something foolish with their money. She doesn't want to end up on the street pushing a shopping cart, does she?

If Washington chooses a Republican governor just as we get a Democratic President and Congress who could send us the stimulus/pork this state needs, we're as dumb as any red state the Stranger and its readers ever made fun of.

Why do liberals encourage being a empty-headed voters? This stupid bitch has her vote and she has no idea why. Oh yeah, yeah she does. It says "democrat" by her name. That's all she needs to know. But wait! Her husband isn't voting for her?! She pulls her ace, CHOICE ISSUE. OMG it didn't work, but that's she knows. OMG, what to do? "I don't know a fucking thing about this, quick, somebody, help me! Help me argue my 'opinions!' HAAAAAAAALLLLPP!!!"

Economy: Ask him if he can name the last government, state or federal, run by a Republican that did well financially during that administration. This country has a history of Republicans fucking up the economy, and a Democrat coming in and cleaning up the mess and leading us to economic golden ages (Roosevelt, Clinton, probably Obama). The deficit WA faces is not Gregoire's fault, but caused by decrease revenue in sales tax and real estate tax. This state has no income tax and is therefor vulnerable to economic flux. Whose fault is the current economic shit hole? Yup, the current Republican federal administration.

Gay Marriage: yes the democratic supermajority didn't give it to us, but Rossi sure as hell won't. I'd like my civil rights please and I don't mind beating the crap out of dumb straight men who keep them from me.

Transit: Dear god how long will it take Seattle to get a damned train system (which is something it needs, especially if it's going to fulfill it's self imposed label as a world class international city)? A hell of a lot longer if Rossi is Governor.

Even if Gregroire wins, she should fire whoever managed her re-election and take a serious, hard look at how fucked up this campaign was in every way.

I voted for her and started out liking her, but I had to hold my nose to do it after the last couple of months of inane negative ads, and don't think she deserves (winning) the office after either of the campaigns she's run so far.

Thanks for calling me a dumb bitch, that is really productive.

I know all the reasons to vote for Gregoire and against Rossi. I'm asking for extra ammo to to support my assertions. Most Slog posters, with the obvious exception of you, are pretty informed on the issues and can give me some help to really nail him with a good argument.

Well there's always that one line from Rossi: "Requiring clinics to carry birth control/morning after pill is like me requiring a store to carry my favorite sports drink"

Sorry Dino, but if you don't get your favorite sports drink, A FUCKING BABY THAT WILL COST YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS DOESN'T RESULT! ASS!

Oh, also the global warming thing. If you want Washington to just sit around and do nothing about transit, if you want to expand highways and put more cars on the road, adding more pollution (Remember earlier this year when Seattle went above the limit set by the clean air act for pollution particles in the air... yeah, that was because of cars)... then vote for Dino Rossi.

Oh, also, if you have children, you might also want to vote for Dino Rossi so he can deny them health care.

1. Children's healthcare. Rossi voted to cut children from public healthcare while Gregoire has added tens of thousands of Washington children to the rolls.

2. Higher education. In Rossi's budget (during part Republican control in Oly) his "balanced budget" came with huge increases in tuition and cuts to public universities.

3. The minimum wage. Rossi said he wants to cut it by $1.50. As a student working my way through school, this threatens my ability to pay rent and eat, save for tuition and buy books. Yes, Rossi backpedaled a little on this, but he made his desire clear. Even if he only wants to cut it for teenagers, it creates an incentive to hire a 17-year-old and not, say, a college student, senior, working adult.

4. Gay rights. Rossi would veto anything that comes his way, while Gregoire has been gradually signing bills into law that expand gay rights. The legislature has the power to put through a marriage bill, and after this election would be the time to do so. Would Rossi sign it into law? Hell no.

5. The BIAW. The Building Industry Association of Washington has been sending millions Rossi's way. Do you really want a candidate who agrees with these pro-development, anti-regulation. let's-Californicate-Washington sprawl advocates?

Just food for thought.

The easiest argument for me is that Chris Gregoire has been an excellent governor, spending money wisely, storing surpluses for future downfalls, and having most of her failures due to our initiative process that allows groups like the builders association (BIAW) and other vested interests to both pay for signature collectors and a crazy court decision that allow signature gatherers to openly lie about what someone is signing.

Can anyone imagine us having the transportation issues we had if Tim Eyman hadn't intervened again and again using paid gathered funded by vested interests to hobble the process? Huge shortfalls were purposely made possible through that, and Gregoire managed to make it work regardless.

Dino Rossi has a history as a poor business, aided often like George W Bush by interests that wanted to groom him to bring favorable regulatory processes for development to the governor's mansion. He's anti-choice, he's anti-education, he's pro magical thinking on spending.

His solution for 520 would throw out years of work among the communities involved, the state DOT, and other parties, in favor of a top-down fiat that would make no one happy and wouldn't increase traffic flow or safety.

The Seattle Times endorsement of Rossi essentially says that because Gregoire led during a time of economic health of the state, she's incapable of leading during a downturn. Rossi is cited as a businessman, all proof aside, given that most of the last decade he's been in office, running for office, or working for a "non-profit" that's funded by interests that want him in office. Great businessman.

A vote for Rossi is a vote to cut everything but what the developers want, and a vote to worsen our health.

Here is the email I just got from my husband after I sent him tons of links and comments from Slog:

"I looked at all of your Bolshevik articles and did my own research, and I’m going to vote for Gregoire. She’s a bad manager and a reckless spender, but at least she spent the money on good things like transportation and education. And someone had a good point that even though the ads were nasty on both sides, his campaign was straight Rove style, and anybody who is using smear campaigns should be defeated on those grounds alone for stooping low."

Or maybe he is just trying to shut me up?!

And now you need us to tell you if he's trying to shut you up or not. Please come back tomorrow to talk about your bill disputes, the animal-tested shampoo he purchased, your discussion about having kids, and whether or not you think he was being sincere when he told you he loved you.

Rainy day fund. Gregoire championed it, it's a fantastic idea for a state like ours, and it's going to lessen the hurt from the next two to four shitty years spent getting ourselves out of this depression.

I have read some good posts on issues and issues are important.

What is lacking though is a review of the two candidates in terms of what drives them and what moral and ethical code they live by.
Governor Gregoire is and always has been driven by a core desire to make Washington a better place for all of us who live here and for future generations. She has NEVER traded on her position for personal wealth, has vision, energy and the skills to deliver for the people of our state.

Dino on the other hand has been a do anything say anything salesman in business and throughout his political carrier. He has repeatedly traded on his position for personal wealth and has sold his soul to the BIAW and MBA. He has no vision for our state or most of its people and will bring shame and scandal to our state if elected.
