Isn't the current time supposed to be the "actual" time, because Daylight Savings Time *ended* Sunday? It used to end earlier in October. It has a longer period of time now between its beginning & end since Bush. It doesn't seem to help anybody...

As far as I can tell, all the arguments in favor of DST have been fairly well demolished (by studies like this one: http://tech.yahoo.com/blog/null/83073). It just seems to be the pain of abolishing it that keeps it around. Anyone want to disagree and offer sound reasons for keeping DST?

the transition hurts. but if you go to work in the a.m., you know it was easier to get up this a.m.

I totally agree.

@1

While it's the "correct" time now, I wish we could have DST be the "correct" time. I'd prefer to have my light in the afternoon when I can use it.

on second reading, it sounds as if you're mad at PST, not PDT. you wish it were always PDT?

Where were you that you got an extra hour at the bar?

I'm with Sir Learnsalot... I prefer to get up in the dark and have some actual daylight after work to enjoy.

Phht! It felt so good to not get dressed and head out while it was still dim this morning. Made a huge difference for me, at least. Yeah, it would be nice to have a bit more daylight after school/work/play but it's already dark by the time I get home at the end of the day so it doesn't upset me.

It really sucks for the boyfriend, however, who stays up until the wee hours and sleeps in. Lazy bum!

The time doesn't change, only the clock changes. The light isn't much earlier or later than it was on Saturday. Do things earlier in the day if you like the light. Or don't even change your clocks - make them say whatever time you want it to be. Fuck clocks anyway.

Best conclusion statement: "Fuck clocks anyways". That made me laugh...

don't blame daylight saving time for standard time's dark ways. it kept you in sunshine a couple extra weeks this year and this is how you treat it?

YEAH, I didn't get an extra ANYTHING at the bars this weekend! I just have to drive home from work in the dark now.

Even worse, all the lights just turned out at work, cause nobody reset the 8 pm lights out for daylight savings time, so they go out at 7 pm while I'm working ...

Screw it, I'm going home.

The last time I was in a bar during the time change was a few years ago, but I remember that they didn't give us the extra hour. So I suppose for drunks it works opposite - in the spring we can drink until 3am! (Kinda!)

I remember when we went on Daylight Savings Time in the winter of 1974 as a way of dealing with the energy crisis. I was in the sixth grade at the time. It didn't save much energy since it was still pitch dark out in the morning while we were getting ready for school. I remember all the kids in my neighborhood carrying flashlights to the bus stop. So @2 is probably correct about DST not delivering on the promised savings in energy. Still, I do like having extended hours of daylight on summer evenings.

the high was 72 today in Madison, Wisconsin
so less light was tolerable
I'll be heading to the polling station at 6am tomorrow. It will be more magical in the dark!

The bars here never, ever stay open the extra hour.

I have this same conversation with someone every year regarding the extra hour of bar time.
Some people insist that they've never been in a bar that stayed open for and extra hour.
I have several times.
I suppose it depends on where you choose to do your drinking!

For the record, Nectar Lounge did in fact stay open an extra hour on Saturday, which meant that DJ Spooky was able to start at 12:30 (DST) and still play over 2 hours.

All bars are allowed to stay open for an extra hour. It is written into Washington State's Liquor Law. If they closed early they are either stupid, lazy or lame.
Check Out Q&A #10:
http://liq.wa.gov/enforcement/enforcementQA.asp
Then go back to your local bar and tell them to fuck off for closing early!

@20 You are right! The other part I liked from that page was this:

20. Can liquor be sold on election day?

ANSWER: Yes.
