Dept. of Unsubstantiated Rumors

posted by on November 6 at 7:45 AM

Not again:

Heard this morning (Thursday) at 5:30 from my brother who just drove past that there was another potential jumper on the Aurora Bridge. Woman in white parka standing on other side of railing, about six cop cars on scene.

UPDATE: There was a woman threatening to jump from the Aurora Bridge earlier this morning, but according to the SPD the woman got down off the railing and is being taken to Harborview for treatment.

Sounds like somebody needs a SAD light box. Holy smokes! Don't jump!

Instead of putting up an ugly fence, why don't we just make folks pay a toll to walk the bridge? At least we'll get some bill out of it. At this rate we'll have enough money to build more bridges without crippling commerce. Woo!

What's going on here? A protest of some kind? Is this art?

I'm going to sit tight and wait for the pictures to come in from passers-by.

Is it selfish to ask jumpers to reconsider their plan if not for their own sake, just because my office window looks out to the bridge? We (and our clients) would love to avoid witnessing two swan songs in one week.

Just stop paying attention to them, and they'll either jump (if Republicans) or wander off, realizing they have no audience.

Or mock them in YouTube videos so that nobody wants to jump from a bridge anymore.

People used to do other things instead of bridges, it's the symbolic and public nature of the act that draws them to this instead of bathtubs, train tracks, and teasing pit bulls.

@10: Suck it up. Every neighborhood has its own problems, whether it be the street urchins in the U District, the heroin junkies in Capital Hill, a half-way house here, a methadone clinic there, etc.

Fremont has the best spot to off yourself in the city, just accept it and consider it a necessary public service to spread the unsightly aspects of society around. At least the jumpers don't bring more crime.

Fence stops impulsive jumpers. Then jumpers get help, lead happy lives. No fence cruel.

we should expect to see this for a while. Read what "the tipping point" has to say about suicides and media coverage.

Agreed. Stop covering it and there won't be as much going on.

Doesn't the media have some unofficial policy to not report on jumpers?

ya, its nice....it takes me on average now (with the rain, b/c for some reason Seattle people can't drive in the rain, even more so then they can't drive in general any other other time) 30-45 min to travel 7.9 miles. Nice.

kinda, uh, just wonderin'... why are some people such assholes when it comes to suicide?

i'm no saint, but when i read about a jumper the first thing i think of is how much pain they must be in. (and no, I don't think mockery will stop a suicide.) maybe that makes me a sucker.

#22, people who have never been taken seriously in their lives read comments like yours and know that they can get your sympathy and your attention if they commit suicide publicly, so they do. You are the problem. The rest of us laughing at them and mocking them are the solution. I feel some sympathy for anyone with a connection to that person, but none for the shitheel who blocked traffic when they could have done the decent thing like Michael Hutchence.

The 358 going down Aurora is one of the fastest rides (and the smelliest and craziest) in the city. It's better than the Chicago El when some asshole isn't jumping off the bridge. I have no sympathy for the fuck-head who fucks that up.
