why does my voting to be able to determine my own death when terminally ill and in pain affect anyone who is Catholic?

He's right, many people are Anti-Catholic. Look at all the blood on the hands of the Catholic church, I'd be mad at them too. It's time to push the Religious Radical extremists out of the lives of others, they should focus on their own life.

Is it "bigoted" to simply recognize out-loud that Catholic beliefs are irrational and that the execution of policy based on those beliefs has wreaked untold havoc on humanity over the centuries?

There is a difference between attacking Catholicism the ideology and Catholics the people. Just as there is a difference between saying republicans are wrong on taxes and saying republicans should be strung up.

It's a stupid argument considering that American Catholics hate traditional Vatican policy. If there were an American Pope, there would be married, female, gay priests, and abortion would be paid for by collections from your parish.

He's right that proponents of the initiative have to wrestle with the fact that some of the most organized opposition to it comes from the Catholic Church. But since Connally is a Catholic himself, he thinks any criticism of the Church's position on this issue is a "slam", since he's got god on his side.

im not sure if conelly has a point, but the bigotry against catholics is not rooted in anything theological. it is rooted in the old xenophobic nativist anti irish and anti italian attitudes of the old american puritans.

I'm a practicing Catholic and I'm voting YES on I-1000. How is it religious or compassionate to force someone in excruciating pain and with no hope of recovery to stay alive and suffer against their own free will?

I'm still mad at the Catholic's b/c they wouldn't let me have a kitten in my dorm. (Jesuit school). I did it anyway and got booted from the dorm..I still have her... sans one leg:)My vet has that.

I retaliated by starting my campus radio show (every week)with "Piss On the Pope" . No, I will never grow up. I would do it again.

As for I-1000,sure there's room for potential abuses, but it is modeled after a succesful plan in OR and could be beneficial to many suffeing people...I'm voting YES.

and just curious, how can anyone ever be told they can't kill themselves?

it is kinda yuppie that you need a permit from the bureaucrats that abound regulating possible suicide

if there was true universal single payer health care - I would feel differently as well

Ava? My mother was too weak to get out of bed when she died. Was she supposed to walk to the window and toss herself out? Hang herself? Stroll down to a gun shop and buy a gun and blow her brains out?

She needed the option of taking a few pills, in privacy and in comfort, and going to sleep.

Connelly's just afraid his family will have him humanely euthanized once the signs of brain death are confirmed.

Anti-Catholic is about the dumbest damned thing he could have come up with, and he's certainly been guilty of some whoppers in his time. As Dan pointed out, a high percentage of our elected officials are practicing Catholics.

Plus...if people are super religious they WON'T commit suicide (even if capable) despite their suffering b/c it says not to in the bible...if they have a prescription...they get off on a technicality. It really isn't suicide..They are just following MD orders.

There are an awful lot of conservative, fundamentalist Catholics out there who see anti-Catholicism lurking around every corner.

Back when I was still part of the tribe, I went to a lecture about Catholicsm and the media (I needed continuing ed. credits to be allowed to keep teaching religion in a Catholic school). The guy who was speaking, who was then editor of Our Sunday Visitor, a relatively conservative, Catholic, weekly newspaper and is now communications director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The examples he was coming up with for the "rampant anti-Catholicism" in the media - all media - were astonishing in that they seemed, and really were, perfectly innocent. He also had a list of codewords that he said denoted anti-Catholicism. I wish I could remember them now, but I didn't keep my notes from that lecture because it was so utterly useless. I wouldn't have taken notes if I hadn't had to submit a summary to get credit for attending.

It's mass paranoia on the part fundamentalist Catholics, if you want my opinion.
