Your Weekly Spoiler-Free Project Runway Debriefing

Among last night’s revelations:

*The roots of Kenley’s hair-trigger bitchiness! (Apparently, she was raised on a tugboat—like, for real—where I can only imagine she worked as a scullery maid and was taught to respond to any human interference with a switchblade.)

*The identification of Leanne’s Achilles’ heel! (“It’s all so sad,” said Nina Garcia of Queen Leeann’s somber librarian aesthetic.)

*Tears, tears, and more tears! From everyone! (Even me—because the judges failed to kick off the person who most deserved it, but that’s how it goes…)

SPOILER...

Am I the only one who thought it was weird that Jerell won? Normally I'm not so far out of sync with the judges on the winner, but I hated his bodice.

It was kind of a cop out that they didn't kick anybody off, but I'm glad in a way. I sort of like the fact that any of the four people could not make it to the final three, as opposed to just one of the bottom two.

Okay, why does Kenley's father being a tugboat captain means she lived miles away from land during her childhood? Tugboats, at least as I'm aware of them, tend to stay pretty close inland in order to tug boats around harbors and rivers, right? And there would be no reason for a kid to be living on one.

Koto's dress must have looked worse in person, because I thought she was the clear winner.

Koto for the win.

I thought Jerrell's was by far the best. I actually ended up loving the bodice, apart from (as Heidi said) it needing to be tugged up a few inches.

I find it amusing how Kenley's pin-up style, all cutesy bangs and hair ornaments and red lips, contradicts her personal style of all-out bitchery.

Wow, Kenley?! I don't think I've ever seen such open hostility on the runway. The panel of judges seems to dislike her as much as her competitors do.

She does not deserve another chance. Her dress looked like Little Mermaid v. Godzilla and, it cannot be denied: she is Bitchy McPoorsport.

Kenley must die, it's true. But I was gasping, because it looked like they were about to vote Korto off. I thought her dress looked great. And there must be some kind of weird virus going around the fashion world, because that bulked-out, stiff, sloppy silk look he had going on is all the rage. I don't get it.

Jerrell's great, though; Kenley should take lessons from him on how to trash-talk without being a bitch about it. The way he was repeated "AT the TENT" was hilarious.

Kenley seems to be unable to grasp how all that endless "I don't care, I just want to win, I've had a hard life so I'm bitchy and if they don't like it, tough" business can come back to bite her. No, they DON'T like you, dear, and neither does anyone else.

While Kenley uses color in interesting ways and has had some neat designs in the first few weeks, last night's dress looked like a bad quilter's project. For reals.

And, save for the scales at the bottom, didn't she make that same silhouette for the DVF challenge?

Ha! Exactly how I feel about Jerrell, Fnarf. It's been amazing all season how good he is at dealing with other people (every time there's been a group challenge or outside models). And even when he's super catty and bitchy (like last night), it still comes across as kind of charming.

Four words about Kenley's dress: Sid and Marty Krofft.

I was into the idea of the four remaining all making a line to compete for a spot at fashion week the FIRST time they did it, but now it seems like, if they're going to continue doing that, they should make it a known part of the competition from the beginning.

I really think Jerrell is a good designer and I hope he goes to Fashion Week, but if ANYONE else had made that dress, the judges would have hated all over it. I feel that way about a few pieces he did this season. It's like he can do no wrong, and I don't understand it.

@9: Brilliant, Mr. Schmader.

Is last night the first time that every single designer cried on the runway? It was crybaby town up in that motherfucker. Also, I really want P. Diddy to be a guest judge.

Kenley's "I meant to do that" defense is infuriating. My dress has a big hole in the ass? I meant to do that. My dress has a big pee stain on it? That's what I was going for. Argh.

And while it's long been known that the producers have a hand in the outcomes, never has it been more obvious than last night. All four judges hate all over Kenley's reptilian quilting bee outfit and grating personality then boom - the music changes and they all suddenly realize that they are really curious to see what else the most reviled contestant would do in the season finale. Lame.

Did you see the preview for the finale where Korto has a dress that features a giant golden vagina? Tim does not approve.

@9--

i said nearly the same thing to my wife: sigmund the seamonster, running across the beach.

and if you called her on it?

"that's what i was GOING FOR, HEIDI. you don't GET IT. pshaw." [rolls eyes]

Of course Kenley didn't get the boot! You have to keep "the bitch" in through the finals. It's a rule of reality show casting. You have the one who everyone thinks should win (also known as the nice one) -- as played by Leanne, the bitch (Kenley), the drama queen (not sure if this is Korto or Jerell this season), the inept bumbler (Suede and others), the camp-er (Orange Boy) and then fill out with other versions of the same characters. The longer you keep up the mix, the longer it stays interesting. And you MUST keep in the bitch and/or the drama queen through finals or there's no show!

You think anyone watches these shows for the fashion/design/hair styles/dog grooming ability?

FUTURE SPOILER:

After seeing the final runway collections, and knowing she wasn't kicked off before the finale, it's apparent Leeann the Fashion Assassin™ will be taking home top honors. Her collection was far and away the best.

No, Korto's final collection was better than Leanne's, though they are clearly the top two.

kenley is great. her designs are better than korto and jerell's. she has an attitude, she can't help it! poor kenley. leanne is clearly the best but i think korto gets kicked off next week. i like her a lot as a person, but her designs are usually so boring.

FASHION WEEK SPOILER:
i agree leanne should win, but the judges might get sick of her sad muted noodles. i think jerell's the only real competition. he had some really good designs.

maybe she lived on a tugboat the way people in seattle live on tugboats. thye're not working tugboats, they're FOR FUN.

Spoiler: the producers decide who wins before anything gets shown. Korto, african immigrant not african-american, with her 60s black power afro was the darling from the beginning. They have to cover their demographics.

@ David S #9, when that dress came out on the runway I immediately thought of the evil queen from Little Mermaid.

And she just doesn't get that the reason she has to fight everyone all the time is because she's a bitch.

I'm glad they kept all four though. In all honesty none of them did a great job. And with the flower Korto chose I thought she was going to do something amazing but I think they all let nerves get to them and overthought EVERYTHING.

I love Jerrell and I didn't hate his dress.

Korto's wasn't bad but I expected something so much cooler.

Leanne's dress design was fine, nothing great, but the color, or lack there of killed it.

Did I mention Kenley's a bitch?

#19: huh? do you really think african immigrants are a large demographic of project runway viewers?

Posted by jrrrl | October 2, 2008 12:24 PM

Was her dress an homage to her hard life on the tugboat where evil mermaid queens were her only friend and companions?

@21
It's not about the viewer demographics, it's about the winner demographics.

I would really hate it if Jerrell didnt make the runway final. He won the last competition and if he doesnt make it, it would seem it didnt matter at all. I think he should have been safe and the other 3 had to fight it out for the final 2 spots. I love Jerrell, he is so happy and has such a keen eye for fashion!
