What Was Happening 9 Months Ago Today?

posted by on October 7 at 12:40 PM

Today is Dan Savage’s birthday. It’s also Annie Wagner’s birthday. It’s also Sherman Alexie’s birthday. What happens in the first week of January that inspired their parents to get it on? Post-New Year’s celebrating? Dead-of-winter keeping warm? National Pharmacist Day?

(Other birthdays today: Desmond Tutu, John Mellencamp, Vladimir Putin, Yo-Yo Ma, Thom Yorke.)

Wow, that's an impressive set of birthdays today. Happy birthday Dan, Annie, and Mr. Alexie!

And happy birthday to Putin. What, exactly is an appropriate birthday gift for Mr. World Domination? Estonia?

Sweet. Now I can look up Dan's address and voting history.

Man, if John Mellencamp, Yo-yo Ma, and Thom Yorke got together on an album...

Shit would be off the charts!

My little sister and I were both due on October 5th of different years. I, too, would like to know the answer to this question.

@10 - Maybe your parents made a point of having unprotected sex on the same day every year?

Gestation's not "9 months", it's 280 days, give or take. Which would put their date of conception on... wait for it... December 31!

It wasn't just cold, it was fucking cold.

1)Why does it irritate me so much that I'm almost exactly a year older than Dan? (meaning, 35) My birthday was Saturday.

2)Yes, people get drunk and fuck for New Years...also, it's usually fucking cold and there's nothing else to do.

3)How much money DID Sherman Alexie invest in the Stranger? It's either that, or he's fucking someone on staff...that, or some sort of blackmail.

4)Libras ROCK!

Don't have to stop at a kiss :)

Dan was born in the 1950's, right? Maybe his parents were locked in a bunker doing an anti-nuke drill until "one thing led to another".

Happy 33rd birthday, Dan. You're counting backwards, right?

@14: Garrison Keillor also announced Alexie's birthday on Writer's Almanac. I don't think he's sleeping with Garrison Keillor.

October 5th is actually the most common birthday in the U.S. (Google it.) Since October 7th is just a couple of days after that, well the theory that people were getting busy around New Year's makes sense! Incidentally, May 22nd is the least common birthday in the U.S.

34 years and 9 months ago...Why that would be the annual Alexie, Wagner, Savage, Tutu wife-swap.

Yeah, what is is about early October? Tons of birthdays among my friends and family fall in this time period. An equally impressive ton fall in February. Anyone know of any sociological reasons why?

The only interesting person born on my birthday is Dave Gahan. But my siblings and I go in order: oldest is May, middle is June, youngest is July, and all within the first 10 days of the month.

@3: don't give away Estonia! I like Estonia.

My birthday was on Sunday, October 5. When I found out that October 5 is the most common birthday in the United States, it made me feel less special. Happy Birthday to Dan, Annie, Sherman, Desi-T, John Cougar, Vlad, Yo-Yo, and T-Yo!

Gosh, two of the world's greatest of the great-Sherman Alexie and Dan Savage-born on the same day! Who could have ever imagined! How sad this world would be without their imagination, humor, compassion and original talent. My world is so much brighter because of these two brightest of the bright lights! From Miami to Seattle, a candle of hope and love!

My day it 10/16. I guess my old man was too drunk on New Years to get the job done, so he made up for it later. Ok, 11 days later. Eat me.

Happy Birthday, Dan, you old geezer...

@24: New Years would appear to have something to do with the vast number of early October birthdays, but I wonder about May 22 being the least common. Maybe in the middle of August it's just too hot? My birthday's in mid-April, but I was born in Canada and this was before global warming...

A round of birthday wishes for all!
It will be 15 years ago on the 17th that my daughter was born. I blamed the water in Mexico for feeling lousy when I got back from vacation!
