The New Fighter Jets and the Specific Forney Hands

posted by on October 22 at 16:49 PM

Dominic posted earlier today about tonight’s public meeting about the proposed Capitol Hill Sound Transit station art.

Here are some updated images fresh from ST of the designs by Mike Ross and Ellen Forney. Both artists will be on hand to explain how these evolved from their early iterations.

Are they for-sure going to do the fighter jets, or is that still up for debate? Because: fuck that.

I wish Forney could do her hand sex series. I loved it, and now I can't look at her hand-work and not think of it.

I dream of the day when my life is so easy that I can get upset about artwork at a public transit stop

Yeah, fighter jets = bad public art but people the stranger likes = good public art? I say throw the baby out with the bathwater and condemn all public art. except that obelisk at red square.

I'm a blue-state, war-hating, Gay-marriage loving lifetime liberal democrat, and I love the fighter jets. I think too many people have a myopic view of art, and can't see its transformative nature. As for the hands, I can't wait to see those in real space. I'm thinking 2012 Holiday Card photo with the kids.

the Jets are fantastic...love em.

Since when was public art suppose to be "safe" and "non-controversial"? What kind of boring world do people really want to live in?

I recommend catching the public art tour tonight from 6-8 - a lot of good artists.

Still think the jet thing is a waste, though.

I'm pro-fighter jets. Them coming apart and driving towards each other, morphed from machines of war into psychedelic-colored birds of peace. Great concept.

I'm just afraid the Forneys are going to get tagged to shit.

They look more like Pokémon than fighter jets.

Count me in for the fighter jets. Didn't care for them when I first saw them, but it appears they've been reworked, and I'm starting to warm to them.

I can't look at the (pinky-swearing?) Forney hands there and not think of goatse.

Maybe that says more about me than about Forney, but there you have it.

Looking good. I'm down with the fighter jets. I still think the concept is weak, but I don't hate the computer renderings.

Was Jen Graves trying to prime us for this earlier with her Broken Obelisk post? I'm picking up a 'sense of evil' theme.

So the transit station is going to look great when it's built. I'm not sure that the aesthetic will age well, but fuck it. Build on.

what's the cost?

irrelevant?

I daresay this art costs a lot and this money would be a lot better spent on actual service. There are many NYC subway stops with no art at all -- the trains still work.

add me to the list of liberal blue angel hating lovers of the fighter jet bird sculptures. I just hope they look as lovely from ground level as they do in these whimsical 3d renditions.

I can't look at the Forney and not think of the last second before a beloved someone finally, ultimately disappears...

It's a melancholy work.

The shoot taggers, don't they?

They don't? Well they should.

Ellen's hands, fuckin' or otherwise, are always a welcome sight in my book. This is going to kick ass.

I'm sure they'll put anti-tagger coating or whatever on the art.

I like both the arts but the rest of the station looks like poo in those renderings. :[

Fnarf @8

This was brought up at the meeting. The pieces will be like 12ft off the ground, so unless a tagger has their spraycan on a pole and can do it fast, the hands should be safe.

Check out the third picture down. That shows what you're gonna see as you descend the escalator to the platform. That view is gonna make you shit your pants in awe.

After seeing Mike Ross's presentation, including the new tweaks to the sculpture, I'm now feeling a little more favorable about it. I don't care for the bright green parts on all the cut faces, but the new arrangement looks very graceful.

Ellen Forney's hands are wonderful. I especially like the smaller 'walking hand' one. She mentioned that they'll be hand painted on the walls, but since the design is so simple they'll be easy to repair if they get tagged. Also, they'll be about 12 ft off the ground.

said it before, I'll say it again...love pink deconstructed fighter jets. Great anti-war statement and totally appropriate for cap hill.

war-hating home in favor of the pink jets! AND forney, for sure!!
