@2 - It was a negative ad against Barry Goldwater, who many believed would not hesitate to nuke Russia if hostilities escalated. There's no explicit name-calling or mudslinging in the ad, but in the context of 1964 and the cold war, the subtext was 'vote for LBJ or die in a holocaust'.
Biden doing great on TV right now, 8:35 am pacific time.
Says we have the final verdict on a failed economic philosopy and it's time for wholesale change.
That's the kind of explanation we need; using this crisis to attack the whole GOP philosophy and usher in a greater role for the govt. to lead and direct and manage the economy to ensure fairness, greening, and growth. He's talking retirements, debts, jobs, etc. but not just in that list-y wonky way. He asks what about the past eight years would McCain change? Nothing. Tying McCain to how you can't change if you stood with Bush on priv. of ss, global warming, that regarding lives of middle class & health care, gas, college and mortgages McCain and Bush are the same. "You can't call yourself a maverick when all you've ever been is a sidekick."
Touche. Prase is Rendell's.
Describes how from 9 am to 11 am on one day McCain had "what we Catholics call an epiphany on the economy." Did he suddenly realize incomes have dropped? jobs were lost? premiums have doubled in last eight years? This econominc crisis is final verdict on failed eco.philosoph. re cutting regulations ...the problem with McCain's epiphany is not that he saw the light...he saw the presidency slipping from his grasp.
We've lost two trillion dollars in retirement funds. WE need wholesale change in our economic philosophy--because that's what got us here. We need to strengthen middle class....let bankruptcy judges change mortgages...all our plans from r and d to infra to heatlh are all about jobs jobs jobs it's all about jobs making sure people have skills to have great jobs keeping your health care etc.
We'll give a tax break t "people who draw a paycheck" help you fill your tank etc.
This is great messaging.....
McCain wants to add $300B in tax cuts to wealthy ....we're going to rebuild America, create two million new jobs averaging $50K a year....Florida will gain 120,000 new jobs....on energy we'll end addiciton to oil and strengthen security protect enviro and create 5 million newhigh paying jobs.....by investing $15B a year over ten years in renewable wind solar etc. Creating 5 million new jobs..
he moves on to cutting health care costs....
McCain's plan will cause 20 million people to be drpped from employer plans ....
This is another way of saying you're on your own in the GOP ownership society view...
Slog should post a video of this speech, it's about the best one Obama or Biden has given lately, it's all about the economy and uses those concrete visual words that really connect with middle class voters.
And he's connecting it to how the whole GOP philosophy is basically a scam...
Props, kudos, well done, keep it up, magnifique, formidable, bravo.....even Obama could learn from this speech.....
And history goes back even further than 1964. Our "Founding fathers" were also "Founding Partisans" and "Founding-Unfounded Slime-mongers" who used negative attack ads and propaganda, much of it scurrilous and wildly untrue.
“For many years, it’s been referred to as the beginning of negative commercials,” Mr. Schwartz said in an interview with MSNBC in 2000. “There was nothing negative about it. Frankly, I think it was the most positive commercial ever made.”
More positive than an ad with zombies in it, to be sure.
"Finally, in what has to be the least subtle negative ad technique in history, Adams' people distributed flyers that said, "Jackson is to be President, and you will be HANGED." It's true! Jackson is running for president on a platform of Murdering Everyone. That he even got the nomination in the first place is just a shocking oversight on everybody's part."
For once I find myself agreeing with Comte. This advert was in fact understood as a Goldwater reference.
@ #7 ... I'll brave the PC Answer Curse on this one. The "We've lost two trillion dollars in retirement funds" is a plain scare line. As anyone who's had any business experience knows, you have not lost money on an investment until you SELL.
If you buy 1000 shares of Acme PLC at 50, you have a $50K investment. If Acme falls to 20, you haven't lost $30K unless you SELL at 20. But if you hold, and Acme recovers and rises to 60--and THEN you sell--you've actually made money despite the intervening drop. Most retirement funds are socked away, and should simply stay that way until we get a market recovery. No doubt the bright dawn of an Obama inauguration will bring that--can I get a witness?
Of course, I understand that details like this are considered unnecessary nit-picking by lot of folks. Just saying.
"We must either learn to love each other, or we must die."
I loved this ad after I watched it. It's negative, hair-raising and frightening, but it is also beautiful and appeals to our better natures even as it appeals to fear.
Too many negative ads these days are coarse and petty and ram their point down your throat without asking you to think at all. They could take a lesson from this one.
Gak attack! Haha! Git off tha phone nigga!
How is this the "mother of all negative ads"? How is it even negative?
Talk to us Charles.....I am trying to do a Vulcan mindmeld but I am getting nothing back.....
Wouldn't she be the Eve of the negative attack ads? Or, if you want to get all pseudepigraphal about it, the Lilith of the negative attack ad?
Just, you know -- Eden was a place and all that.
Is no one else awake yet in Seattle? East coast Slog readers are bored!!
@4 Try being in Europe. No action till tea time.

In chaos, opportunity.
Unity y'all--
Seriously, kids this is the ad that pretty much ushered in the era of the negative TV attack commercial.
I realize it's waaaaaaay before most of yours time, but still - history and all.
Yes.
And history goes back even further than 1964. Our "Founding fathers" were also "Founding Partisans" and "Founding-Unfounded Slime-mongers" who used negative attack ads and propaganda, much of it scurrilous and wildly untrue.
Scariest political ad I've ever seen and may ever see, unless politicians start creating ads with fuckin' zombies in'em.
Said Tony Schwartz of his ad:
“For many years, it’s been referred to as the beginning of negative commercials,” Mr. Schwartz said in an interview with MSNBC in 2000. “There was nothing negative about it. Frankly, I think it was the most positive commercial ever made.”

It worked. And then he bombed Vietnam back to the stone age.

Nice counting. She had that bomb coming to her.
Don't you wish americans had the attention span for a 60-second ad anymore?
