I know nothing about Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio. I have never actually even heard that name before in my life. I guess the Nobel official who declared American culture was too insular was right. NONE of the new crop of laureates holds a candle to the insular Americans Saul Bellow (3/4 of whose books concern Chicago Jews) or William Faulkner (ALL of whose books focus like a laser on a barely populated county in rural Mississippi) who may have covered a small patch of ground but knew how to tell a Goddamn STORY! Something that most of the recent winners have in common, with the notable exception of Orhan Pamuk, is that they are moralists first and story tellers second. I say that makes for dull literature and I say to hell with it.
