This episode came up in a class I took in Classics of Greek literature. The teacher was discussing the Iliad (naturally) and the epics of Marduk as examples of first-order stories that served as cultural building blocks. She said "It's a lot like that one episode of Star Trek..."
...which in turn is a complete rip-off of "Robinson Crusoe On Mars", which is of course a sci-fi'ed rip-off of Dumas, which is - oh hell, what @11 said.

One day - when they do a reunion show - I hope they address Picard's PTSD.
One of my favorites as well. Zokath, his face black, his eyes red!
