The county spokeswoman should troll Planned Parenthoods in a van full of adoptable children. When she spots some Pro-Life protesters she should leap out of her van and say, "You want to save a kid?" shove some foster kids into the protesters arms and say, "You can start with these!" and then leap into her van and drive away.

Also, she should demand to see voting records and find the people who're against gay adoption. When she locates their addresses she should drive her van-load of unwanted children to their houses, and when they answer the door, "Remember how you voted to ban gay adoption? I guess that means you're volunteering to raise them yourself! Here they are!"

I predict the shortage of foster parents and the gay adoption controversy will magically disappear over night.

So, I've got some money I'd like to donate to various causes. In addition to various other causes, I'm debating giving money to Gregoire, Obama, and No on 8 - of the three who needs the money the most?

I feel that way every time I see those sorry fucks out in front of the metro theatre in the u. dist.

Don't those people have better things to do with their time?

I'd automatically rule out Obama -- he'll always have enough money. Gregoire's a harder call, but perhaps Washington would survive a term of Rossi? I don't know.

But I do know that if we lose marriage equality in California, the entire country is screwed. If we keep it, the entire country will benefit.

I'd ask that you please give your money to No on 8. Plus, Dan has guaranteed to give you advice if you do, so that's a twofer.

Prop 8 has consistently polled poorly, but a new poll shows it leading by a few points (who knows how accurate it was, though). I doubt prop 8 will pass, but it will be very bad if it does.

Gregoire, though, is in very real danger of losing. A Rossi win would be terrible for us in Wa -- maybe even worse than a McCain win. Rossi would block any bills and funding for gay rights, reproductive freedom, comprehensive sex ed, transit, social services of all kinds, and health care. He would push giant road projects, creationism, abstinence-only sex "ed," and big business tax cuts.

I am by far the most scared of Gregoire losing.

@1. I have a tendency to go off on a similar rant whenever I see this group of dumbfucks that every so often lines a street in downtown Chicago with huge, blown up posters of aborted fetuses.

It goes something like, why don't this people do something productive with their time? If they want to actually reduce the number of abortions, they should set up a counseling clinic for women who have unplanned pregnancies. Provide adoption support, or, for those that want to keep their babies, parenting classes. Perhaps even provide material support (diapers, clothes, baby food, etc.) for women who complete the classes.

But, no. It's much more productive to stand around on the street with pictures of fetuses in trash cans.

@8 Unfortunately, the latest polls show Prop 8 passing, in part because -- unbelievable but true -- younger voters are now increasingly in favor of it.

All along, the numbers were a dead heat, at best. There is now a very real chance that Prop 8 will pass. That will surely happen if the ten million dollar fundraising gap isn't closed. Their well-funded lies are now trumping our cash-poor truth.

If Rossi is elected, Washington will suffer, that's true. But it won't suffer forever.

If Prop 8 passes, the entire country suffers. And a Constitutional Amendment -- one that strips American citizens of their rights, as voted on by other American citizens -- is, essentially, forever.

Both Rossi and Prop 8 are bad. One is bad locally and the other nationally. One's potential for damage will pass and the other's won't.

As bad as Rossi is for Washington, not stopping Prop 8 will be much worse and for more people. For those reasons, please donate to No on Prop 8.

The sad thing is, this douchebag went off like this once before. It took the democrats proposing a bill banning republican adoption, and the (republican) speaker of the state house agreeing that it was wrong to shut him up.

The Republican elected officials are not the same people that are responsible for trying to place children in homes. It's that simple. I would have asked the spokeswoman what party she was voting with.

#11, maybe you're right. As far as I can tell, really only one major poll showed Proposition 1 passing. The older ones showed "No" pretty far ahead. If another major poll comes out showing Prop 1 passing I'll agree with you, but I'm giving money to Gregoire until then (if I find any money, anyway).

Anyone actually interested in what happens to foster children should become a court appointed special advocate. You can learn about the program by going to www.washingtonstatecasa.org -- and speak up for one child at a time.

I don't care about the politics of hate the Republican's use when children's lives are at stake. These officials are doing their best to find loving homes. The last place I'd look for a loving home would be with an anti- abortion rights moron. Aren't these the people who think they can pray away their children's deadly diseases and believe in whipping them, brain washing them and then throwing them away if they don't believe in these religious extremists views?

Emily, it's not the state of Ohio, it's Hamilton county. If you work in CPS at Hamilton county, odds are you are liberal to the bone. it's your bosses, the county commissioners, who are the troglodyte republicans. cincinnati is a hollowed out donut hole of white liberals, ignorant appalachians, and dirt poor, angry african americans. the surrounding county is lily-white german & irish republican catholics who wouldn't piss on a black person if they were on fire. too busy mowing their lawns & getting heart disease eating shite from Krogers.

@19 it's not that woman's fault, she just some social worker. for all you know she could have voted for gay rights, donated to campaigns, etc. and its sure as hell not the kids fault that state hasn't passed gay rights legislation.
that kind of attitude is like an antiabortionist saying a woman who was raped should be denied the right to an abortion because she shouldn't "get away with it" (I've actually heard that argument) it punishes all the wrong people.

@19-The woman was very nice, brought goodie bags for us, and was very warm and gracious. She's not responsible for the action of the politicians above her and there was no reason to quarrel with her. I regret that I did not get the chance to talk with her one on one myself, but I was both pleased and touched by her visit.

While I don't love max solomon's negative comments about our fair city, I can't deny there's a lot of accuracy in his description.

I go to weekly mass. I went to confession last week. I'll take communion today. I'm going on a retreat next weekend.

As a proud Catholic extremely influenced by our Church's vision (often obscured) of a humanizing world, I'm happy to have donated to defeat Proposition 8.

In my work as a public defender, one of my most amazing/horrifying experiences was representing a woman who our society has relegated to the lowest of the low, of not respecting her dignity in any way, shape, or form.

At one point, during her incarceration for a typical "homeless crime', she thought about an abortion because she didn't want another child of hers to be thrown into her city's catastrophic and abusive child foster care system, which would happen if she were still in prison at the time of her delivery. Fortunately, we were able to get her out in time so she could give birth surrounded by her family.

Faced with situations like this, the only possibly theologically correct response is to treat women prisoners with dignity and allow EVERYONE who is willing to help bring children into the world in safety.

The threat to me as an American Catholic doesn't come from whether or not my good friends have finally gotten married after 8 committed years together and will be considering adoption, but from how my client--the widow and the orphan, "the least," the sick, hungry, thirsty, naked, pregnant, and stranger prisoner is treated...
