Ousting Lieberman

posted by on October 29 at 11:46 AM

Via Kos, who says “it couldn’t have happened to a more horrible person.”

Democratic leaders are discussing a major reshuffling of Senate committee chairmanships, according to multiple sources, and the proposed changes include ousting Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) from his coveted chairmanship.

Lieberman, a former Democrat who supports Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for president, is likely to lose his gavel on the Homeland Security Committee he has chaired since January 2007, say the sources who see him being replaced by Sen. Daniel Akaka (Hawaii), the committee’s third-ranking Democrat.

The Dem leadership should hang Lieberman out to dry. He's up for re-election next year and should receive no party funds or backing either. Perhaps his new friends in the GOP will pay him his 20 pieces of silver.

I'm all for Lieberman being stripped of his chairmanship and generally treated like the worthless person he is. But... a small part of me wants to do whatever it takes to get him to vote with the Democrats more often, since we might need the help (and lord knows Lieberman can be bought and sold).

But, it's only a small part. The rest of me will thoroughly enjoy his comeuppance.

@1 Actually, Lieberman is up for re-election in 2012 - so there will be a lot of awkward "hanging around" for the next few years, while Connecticut voters marinate in their buyers remorse. As a Jew, I just wish ousting him from our species was as easy as denying him a chairmanship.

Sadly, Julie may be right.

Lets say that the Dems pick up a few senate seats, but only enough to gain them a 59 majority. Not enough to stop a Republican filibuster. Holy Joe then becomes the tiebreaker in every filibuster for the next 2 years.

If we throw him under the bus, as he so richly deserves, he'll fuck us on every filibuster out of spite.

Right now I loathe him more than just about anyone in the senate.

I don't think they'll toss him too far from the train. The Senate Democrats are fixated on a filibuster-proof majority, and he's a reliable vote on a lot of issues. But he shouldn't be allowed near the Homeland Security or Defense committees.

I agree with Julie as well. We need as many friends in the Senate as possible. I say fuck him over in a couple years, depending how the next congressional election goes.

I want to add that even though he is a traitor and a fuckhead, people in this country can vote and support whoever they like. I think taking away his chair is spiteful and stupid of the democrats. I think they would be better off just saying that "while we don't agree with Joe's position, every person should vote/support for who they want with little repurcussion."

Cause seriously, no average voter knows who Joe Lieberman is, or even if he is a R or D. His talk at the RNC and support of his BFF McCain doesn't mean shit to the swing voters. Why should we care?

@4 You are of course, correct, I meant to write "next round" but stupidly typed "year". Thanks for the clarification.

Booting Joe from the Homeland Security Committee would be a good start. And remember, most votes to end debate (filibusters) in the Senate are not purely along party lines-- so I don't think there's any need for Dems to kiss his ass any more or less than usual.

Before Snarky Sarah Palin, has there ever been a more smug & self-important political figure in our lifetime than Joe Lieberman?

Joe, you have no power here ...Begone, before someone drops a podium on you!
