The Denver Police union is selling this shirt, re: the DNC protests, for a fundraiser.

And I want one.

Umm. Wait. I don't understand. Is this intentionally supposed to be funny? No, right? Since the police union is selling them it must be non-ironic?

But, I don't understand how this could be non-ironic. Somebody help me out here...

i think they are meant to be funny. but they totally arent. which makes it kind of funny... But not really!

The shirt being sold is meant to celebrate the police response to the "recreate 68" protests (the symbol on the cop's hat is a 68) and benefits the police union in Denver.

It's surprising that Brendan wants to support police brutality like that, or maybe he just didn't bother to look into the actual story behind those shirts.

I think it's meant to be funny, but instead just makes every Denver policeman look like a baby-dicked bully, which they all very well might be...

No, I get it, I just want one. They're double-backflip funny, in a tragic way. (And I don't think giving $10 to the policeman's mutual-aid society constitutes "supporting police brutality.")

They are funny in the way bullies find humor in beating someone smaller. They may be in aid of a mutual-aid society but those cops will take each and every sale as an endorsement of their actions.

I understand, Brendan, brutality is funny when it's not happening to you.

Oh. I get it now. The cops intentionally made the "beat the crowds" reference. I was confused because I was thinking that this was either (1) an ironic shirt made by people who disagreed with the police or (2) unintentional wording by the police union.

But, I didn't consider that the police would find beating protesters to be funny and would intentionally design a shirt that said so.

Odd that now that I get the joke, I am not laughing.

As a guy who suffered at the hands of aggressive riot cops at the RNC—and saw the comedy in it—I think I've got a little leeway on this subject.

So... if the St. Paul police union made a shirt that said "We get up early to BEAT the press" you'd encourage people buy those too? Knowing full well that each shirt sold only validates that attitude towards brutality on the part of the police who printed it?

Interesting.

I'd DEFINITELY buy that shirt, unwelcomed. And I'd pay extra to have the police chief sign it.

No accounting for masochism I guess.

Just a side note, the police union selling the shirts ran out and had to order more because there was so much demand... so I guess there are plenty of people who think like you do, Brendan.

What happened to "Serve and Protect"? I guess the taxpayers get taken for granted after awhile.

These shirts are one of the many reasons a smile crosses my face when I hear a police officer has "fallen" in the line of "duty".

Brendan (@9),
"Saw the comedy in it" -- you mean that part of your piece was intended to be funny? Wow. I assumed the weird, indifferent tone was because you were slightly in shock. Perhaps your desire for this shirt is a Stockholm Syndrome thing.
