Slog - Comments on More On That "Loaned" Ad Time

Josh, blogging over at Horse's Ass, has an update on KOMO's "loan" of $180,000 in free air time to Republican US Rep. Dave Reichert. Apparently KIRO, too, has agreed to run Reichert's ads on credit--an unusual practice that may not be illegal but sure looks like a campaign contribution. (FEC rules bar corporations from donating to candidates.) The Burner campaign, Josh writes, says they're "exploring legal options" on the ads....

The TV stations had better hope Dumb Dave wins. Trying to dun a failed political campaign over unpaid bills is a losing proposition.

Here's something that's also legal: boycotting KOMO and KIRO. Just turn 'em off in response to this crap. Boycott other advertisers (you know, the ones who actually PAY to be on the television). If this situation is enough to fire you all up (I say "you all" because I'm writing from 3000 miles away)- then make those stations NEED to collect from Davey, win or lose.

Cash on the barrel is the trade standard - the Stranger knows that for sure - but - it is not the law.

Credit is the option of the media outlet.

The Bruner campaign is grasping at straws... why would the the public care?

And it shows their ignorance. Some campaigns go in the hole big time and take YEARS to settle the debts, including media.

But the more pertinent question is: IF Burner also requested a $180,000 "credit buy" from KOMO, would they give it to her?

COMTE - no, that is not the issue.

Credit does not mean free, it mans you are on the hook.

I read that Bruner loaned her campaign $140,00.00 to stay on the air. Which seems a strong and OK response.

I think at the very least this is a violation of their public policy statement. It is also an ethical violation. Don't these things count for the use of the public airwaves?
