Slog - Comments on Man, I Love Small-Town U.S.A!

I can't emphasize enough how much Sarah Palin makes me want to throw up. “John McCain is always, always proud to be an American,” Ms. Palin told more than 10,000 people at the Richmond International Raceway. “U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” she continued, leading many of them in chant. Nothing warms the heart like a politician leading nationalistic chants, don'tchathink? “America, doggone it, unfortunately we’re deep in debt, and Barack Obama would put us even deeper in debt,” she added a few minutes later. “We’ve got to reverse this. America, we cannot afford another big spender in the White...

Comment by Julie in Chicago

The comment about how they “ultimately decided” to have the baby just drives me batty. If she thinks abortion is wrong, why was there even any discussion at all? Killin’ babies is killin’ babies whether they are “special needs” or not. Lack of internal consistency makes me angry.

Ahh Richmond, it's a great town (I was born/raised there), and most of it's people are smarter than Palin. By the by, the news reports of this rally tell that she spoke with around or just over 10,000 people. That's a bit, for sure, but the Richmond Int'l Raceway has space for 112,000 - I wonder how many crowd photos we'll see of that?

That bit about praying and ultimately deciding is such bullshit -- they have to throw that in to make the drama real to people who can't connect the dots. Only a woman who believes other women shouldn't have the right to terminate a pregnancy would think she could get away with this kind of daytime television script. Gah, the stupid!

Comment by Seajay

To be accurate, national debt and national deficit are two rather different things. A national debt, in this day and age, means money goes overseas. A deficit means that money gets rearranged within this country.

And if we're gonna talk about big spenders, I don't see how Mr Obama's proposals, if all implemented, can come in under a trillion dollars of new spending. That's not to mention the rapidly ballooning Social Security and Medicare obligations.

A few weeks ago, Mr Obama said he'd consider putting some parts of his agenda on hold "if the economy gets worse." Since then the Dow's lost about fifteen percent, and nine major banks have agreed to partial Federal buyouts. I'd call that the economy getting worse, but I haven't heard what he'd put on hold yet. Any guesses??

"She and her husband, Todd, talked, prayed, reflected and ultimately decided to have the child" is a PARAPHRASE of her speeches. By, to the delight of conservatives, the NY Times.

Here's a counter-argument: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/bill-hobbs/2008/10/14/new-york-times-writer-thinks-palin-pro-choice

Of course, conservative Newsbusters offering up ONE speech in which Palin doesn't really speak in terms of "choice" doesn't prove that she NEVER speaks in terms of "choice". But some writer in the NY Times' interpretation of the GIST of her speeches definitely doesn't prove she DOES, either.

The bandwagon-jumping and outrage probably need to be put on hold until and unless WE can find actual speeches by actual Palin to substantiate a claim of hypocrisy specifically re: "deciding" to have Trig.
