Boris, the mayor of London, is for Obama. Two days after receiving the backing of former US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has received the backing of another politician who might have been expected to support his Republican opponent John McCain - London's Conservative mayor Boris Johnson. Defying the unwritten rule that politicians don't interfere in other countries' elections, Mr Johnson told readers of the right-wing newspaper The Daily Telegraph that Barack Obama seems "highly intelligent" and that "unlike the current occupant of the White House, he has no difficulty in orally extemporising a...

I know this isn't true (especially since he contextualized his statement against our current speak-and-spell president) but did anyone find themselves tenuously wondering whether his remark was reminiscent of the "he's so...articulate" refrain that pervaded the early months of Obama's campaign?

1. @2: um, no.

2. The conservative party leader can endorse McCain -- but if another conservative endorses Obama that violates the unwritten rules?

Typical of conservative doublespeak.
("We hate socialism/let's nationalize the banks").

3. Do tell: whom do bunnies endorse, mate?

Boris is a joke. He is a loveable fool as a sometime Television personality, but his endorsement of Obama isn't even close to Powell's. Ken (now working for Chavez) Livingstone probably wouldn't endorse either of them though.

barky, the endorsement of a war criminal, even a still-respected war criminal like powell, is one obama can do without.

"orally extemporizing a series of grammatical english sentences" is a pretty hilarious observation.

I get confused. London has had a communist mayor and a mayor named Boris & they're not the same guy! Ok, maybe I'm just stupid.

You know what? Obama IS articulate. I find myself stepping around that word because it really is the perfect word for him.

Let's not forget that Biden actually said that Obama was "clean".

The only reason Boris isn't a war criminal is because no one with any sense would let him anywhere near the reins of real power. He would love to bomb something, preferably Liverpool, between sips of champagne, if he had half a fucking chance. He went to better schools than Palin (fucking Eton, Balliol) but he is, if anything, LESS of a serious person.

Fnarf does seem to know his London politics pretty well. Is there another British ex-pat lurker on Slog?

Here's some classic Boris, being stitched up by Ian Hislop.

I am a fan of Powell, even though he did sit in front of the UN and urge the case for war. I'm assuming that's the War Criminal reference. His speech about how hard Obama rocks persuaded our 87 year old office volunteer to ditch McCain for Obama for her first vote EVER.
