Joe the Plumber Hit by Attack Ad

posted by on October 17 at 12:30 PM

I know I’m not alone in this, but I absolutely love the arrival of Joe the Plumber on the national stage this week. It’s the perfect coda to a totally bizarre campaign season. And this is the perfect coda to Joe’s 15+ minutes of fame:

How the fuck is that guy just 34 years old? (according to the NYT)

@2,

Some people look older than they are. For example, my 29-year-old coworker looks like she's in her 40s. So either that or he's lying about his age.

Mah, it's kinda dumb. Feel free to round up kinda.

@2 Shit, I'd be pissed too.

Republicans love their apocryphal anecdotes (remember Reagan's Cadillac-driving welfare queens?) and "Joe the Plumber" is certainly more streamlined than "Stephen Wurzelbacher the unlicensed contractor and tax-evader." McCain would never have been able to repeat "Wurzelbacher" that many times.

Interesting side note: Working-class hero and registered Republican Wurzelbacher says he thinks Obama's "tap-dancing" is “Almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”

Make of that what you will.

Meh, I'm with Lloyd. Kind of dumb and sort of stretches the truth. He is actually a plumber, he just doesn't need to be licensed because he works for someone else. And, who cares if he goes by his middle name instead of his first name.

Good job of subverting the liberal elite by getting both Tina Fey and Michael Chicklis onboard the McCain train.

I don't think Joe the plumber's done anything to deserve being the target of any attacks. This doesn't appear to be a real ad anyway.

Does he really look that bad though? As a self-conscious 33 year old myself he doesn't look particularly old / ancient.

Daniel honey, I am sure you look just fine.

That jowl on Joe and the wrinkles around his eyes make him look like he his in his 40's. No hair doesn't help either.

He is the perfect example of how the typical republican supporter shows his allegiance to the tribe by placing ideology above self-interest. This guy would in fact save more under Obama. Even if he were to buy his company, which seems impossible, he'd still not be any worse off. His advocacy of McCain's position in fact runs against his own best interest. He's been suckered into supporting the plutocracy, presumably because it in turn supports the ideology of his tribe.

not as extreme, but...reminds me of the character woody harrelson played in "wag the dog." (old shoe?)

Just SAY NO to crack, OMG that little image has such a terrible effect on the mind because our brain can not edit what we see, even if our mind does try to save us.

I give you the Swift-Boating of Graeme Frost, age 12, over the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Boo fucking hoo, "Joe" the "Plumber" (or whatever your real name is, whatever you really do for a living). Cry me a fucking river, John fucking McCain.

Anyone know if the rumor that Joe is related to Charles Keating's son-in-law or brother-in-law (I've seen it both ways) is true? Google just brings up links to the rumor, not to what the truth actually is.

I hope this dies soon. I'm starting to feel a little sorry for SamJoe. I mean, okay, he's a red-baiting Bob Parsons style meathead, but, so are half the people between the Cascades and Lake Michigan.

@6 in many (most states?) but definitely including WA, IL and Ohio you have to have a license to be a plumber as an employee. Just like electricians, sprinkler fitters, elevator mechanics, truck drivers etc. Apparently a relative of his was on the radio today and said that he was not a plant, just a dupe, and was related to the Keating guy.

I love it love it love it.

Still, at the end of the day. In two days, everyone of us can be slandered. Thank you internet. No one is innoscent! None of us are. God bless you internet.

He smokes, which is why he looks older than he is.

So ... now we're Swift-boating Joe the Plumber eh? Wow, that takes courage and integrity. One ordinary Ohioan against the Democratic attack machine. Wonder how this'll play out with other ordinary Ohioans?
