Comment by LindaDempster

The child-like simplicity is a wonderful thing, when done by children. These silly pieces are really kind of sad. Not alot of anything worthy of the term art. I was once on a flight with a fairly famous glass artist and at some point I asked him about the thought that people say, "oh. give me some hot glass and I too could create that stuff.." and he said, clearly, "go ahead."
With Mitchell, I am guessing my 7 year old niece could seriously do these same sorts of "things".

Comment by homage to me

He seems to be the darling of the art critics, and probably has lots of fans, but I've been even slightly moved by his work. LindaDempster @2 is right.

Comment by terry miller

@1

the pieces are terra cotta (orange, low-fired clay) glazed with a highly opaque white glaze.

@2 & 3

i have been a potter. i have taught children pottery from ages 4-18. I have even taught adults pottery.

no child, much less beginning adult, could do this "thing". period. it's quite technical to get pieces of clay to stick to each other through the multiple firing that a piece like this might entail.

then there is the physics of clay and glazes which cause pieces like this to want to tear apart from themselves as the process proceeds.

so you may not like it, but no, a child couldn't "do these same sorts of 'things'".

Technically, no, you're right terry @4. But at least the child's work is the truthful work of a child, not an effort to be childlike.
