After constantly having to get "patches" for my Windows, and dealing with constant threats, I've told friends to get a Mac. I'm sick of paying for Microsoft's bullshit.

You know, I was all set to despise Vista for, well, everything, until I realized something: windows no longer steal focus. Unlike that useless PowerToy "Tweak UI" for Windows XP that still lets windows steal focus if they want to, Vista actually lets you really stay put on the window you're typing furiously in, no matter what is on fire, no matter how many seconds until core breach. And don't talk to me about the Macintosh Apple. The Apple steals focus too, if it feels like it. This is my number one pet peeve, and because Vista does not steal focus, I forgive everything else (and that's a lot).

Obviously I expect Windows 7 to make stealing focus a top priority, because I'm pretty sure it's a bug in Vista.

@2 - All operating systems require regular updates, including Windows, Mac OS and even Linux. You may find yourself upset when Mac OS pops up its Software Update dialog on you, then asks you to reboot your computer. It's just today's computing reality.

What would make me keen to go for Win7 would be a big announcement from Microsoft that they're throwing every shred of DRM in the dumper and telling the big entertainment companies to go suck eggs.

If you miss a security update (or ten) on your Mac, nothing bad happens. Miss one update on Windows and your box will be a smoking crater within in a week, consumed by angry bots, swarming spyware, and sneaky, sneaky little viruses.

Lunix is strictly for use by hobbyists and tinkerers, and they all have the expertise to choose and locate all the patches they need.

I have to agree, the next Windows won't be that annoying.

I plan to not use it at all, so it won't annoy me one bit (caveat - I owned DOS 2.0, 3.3, 4.0, Windows 1 etc)

Windows has not annoyed me for about 10 years, personally. Except when I have to help other people with it, which is as sad and frustrating as being a heart/lung surgeon with a bunch of dying chain-smoking friends.

If you are a non-techie, get a Mac, and run Parallels, which will allow you to run the occasional Windoze-only apps, which thankfully grow less numerous by the day.

If you are a tech-savvy type, you are either a MS-toadie, or use Linux or a Mac already.

@6 You'er talking out of your ass, I'm guessing you haven't used Vista ona regular bases, I never get spyware or viruses running Vista and I've been running it since BETA.

The annoyance factor Microsoft is talking about is all the security / warning dialogs that popup in order to avoid the spyware getting on your machine. But, trust me, you would have far less spyware and virus problems running Vista.

@9 - actually, there's a free download day for Crossover Office today, if you have a Mac or Linux and miss all that Windows stuff.

Yeah, my bad on the double post earlier.

@12 - I think your projecting with the charge about my poor reading comprehension. Of course I have installed many security updates (Actually they're set to happen on there own in the middle of the night). What I said was that get no Spy-Ware or Mal-Ware / Viruses - XP was far more volatile to this. I also said that the "Annoying" factor MS was referring to was about the security dialogs that pop up warning about possible spy- ware / mal-ware.

You would know that if you used it.

Security updates are a good thing, they happen on all systems and create stability.
