This: Burner's talk of college degree murky Does not say the same thing as this: 8th District congressional race turns on degrees The first, from the Seattle Times, implies that Burner is falsely claiming she has a college degree; the second accurately portrays the real story, which is that Reichert attempted to smear Burner for misspeaking about her computer science and economics degree from Harvard (she called it an "economics degree"), while falsely claiming to have a four-year college degree himselfon his Congressional web site and in campaign literature. (Reichert, who claimed repeatedly to have a B.A., actually has a...

The underlying reason that the Times endorses Reichert is that somehow he's going to protect the termination of the estate tax. All other concerns are secondary. Sloppy reporting in this case will be rewarded by management.
The irony will be apparent when it comes time to leave the newpaper to the "fifth generation". There will be nothing left of the paper to leave.

Burner didn't "misspeak." She said very clearly that she had a degree in economics. The context makes it clear that she was using it as evidence that she would be stronger on the economy.

Whether Reichert lied or not is irrelevant. She lied for her own benefit. Not to call her on it is pure hypocrisy. I know I'm spitting in the wind making this point on this site, but facts are facts.

The Times' little story (the one by Emily Heffter, the author of the Burner one) is written rather snootily and says that the claim to a 4-year degree is only on one site and not on anything Reichert has control over. If there are official sources, I'd love to see them plastered all over the Slog. Anyway, check out this story and its tone (is this a response to you guys?):

---------------

As I reported in a story today, Democratic Congressional candidate Darcy Burner has a bachelor's degree in computer science from Harvard, with a "special field," or concentration, in economics.
Her Republican opponent, Dave Reichert, says he has a two-year associate's degree from Concordia Lutheran College in Oregon.
I did find one Web site that misstates his degree. This congressional directory lists that he has a B.A. He doesn't.
The Congressional Directory is a government site managed by the Office of History and Preservation. A person who answered the phone there wouldn't be quoted, but he said they get their information from "public sources" like newspapers, members' Web sites, and almanacs.
The Burner campaign just sent out a list of five other Web sites that also claim Reichert has a B.A. from Concordia. None of the Web sites are affiliated with the Reichert campaign.
His campaign and Congressional Web sites say simply that "he graduated."

So, I'm a total liberal. That said, Darcy fucked up.

Come on! This is bush league...you don't embellish your education. Not if you are running for your neighborhood watch group, not if you are running for US rep. Duh.

Sure, Reichert needs to be called out for his lie too...

But Darcy? Dumb move.

@5. You're crazy if you don't think it's to Reichert's benefit that people thought he had a BA.

I think it's ridiculous to say that Reichert didn't have "control" over those websites. the Congressional Directory? Are you kidding me? He couldn't just call them up and say, hey, you got it wrong? If I were a Congressman, and the directory said I had a PhD in Economics, I'd be damned sure to call them up and have them fix it...
