An argyle smock with checked shirt. Boy, the 70s were a rough time.

My great-aunt won a James Beard like 11 years ago for a cookbook she wrote. My sister found out about it a couple months ago and freaked out about it. As a regular take away and sandwich guy I had never heard of the James Beard award before.

19 categories? There were 62 awards in 2008. It's a little promiscuous. Not just "best cookbook" (there are a million cookbook categories) but "Best Restaurant Graphics" and "Best Webcast"? Really?

That's going to take some thought. I also can't seem to locate an archive of all the past winners... that would be helpful.

Maneki ??? A classic ??? If it's longevity that makes something a classic, I should be dipped in bronze. The only thing that remotely makes Maneki a classic is its bar and bar menu which is in Japanese and scotch-taped to the bar's back wall.

BTW, a bit of trivia; I believe James Beard attended Reed College in Portland.
