achewood is the best! i'm really surprised that this is the first time the slog has referenced it, especially since onstad is constantly taking on favorite topics such as:

A comic is all about the art. These drawings are painful to look at, created by someone with no visual sense of humor. It looks like any other web comic. (What's the horrible one about libraries?)Even clip-art or faux-clip-art strips like Get Your War On and This Modern World show greater visual creativity. Get Fuzzy's drawings give great pleasure, regardless of one's feeling about the content of the strip. I've never known Paul to be so wrong about anything.
This thing looks like the general college newspaper strip's misunderstanding of Garry Trudeau's style.

so, i'm going to do like the achewood haters and pass judgement on get fuzzy after just now laying eyes on it for the first time. here goes:

oh my god. get fuzzy? seriously? that shit can't even come close to the brilliance of achewood.

since 2002, onstad has been consistently cracking people up and making them feel actual human emotions with his cast of characters. if you actually READ some of his story arcs, you'll see that there is a lot more to achewood than simple drawings of cats and bears and a five-year-old otter named phillippe. onstad gets arty, too. but what really stands out is the writing. good god, the writing. on achewood, content is king. also, the bonus punchlines that can be found in the alt text are often priceless.

so, get fuzzy fans (wtf?), do yourselves a huge favor and read through a few achewood story arcs before you completely dismiss it based on a few out-of-context panels in a slog post.

and maybe i'll do the same with get fuzzy. maybe.

The only comics worth following are Mary Worth, Apartment 3-G, Judge Parker, and Rex Morgan, MD.

You kind of have to start from the beginning to get the most out of Achewood. It's humor lies in its character development and self referencing. It has some really great story arcs that aren't satisfying if you just read one panel.

Achewood's advice column was great. I miss it. What was the name of the cat that was supposed to be giving the advice?

I've actually seen Achewood before. It's alright. But I read Get Fuzzy every morning while I'm having my coffee. It's frequently the first good thing that happens to me during the day -- I deliberately read it before I move on to the news headlines. I'd say GF's batting average is about as high as any current strip.

Haters need to step off. Especially if it's in the vein of "The Velvet Underground is better than the Beatles" school of praising your own off-the-beaten-path preferences to some other thing that enjoys a much wider audience. Meh to that. It's fine if you like chutney-flavored popsicles, but don't go justifying it by saying "anybody who prefers grape popsicles is a fucking idiot!"

Seriously.

Oh, God, yes, Brenda Starr. Do they still run it anywhere? Mark Trail is pretty great, too, especially when the rabbits and squirrels start talking to each other. Yes, Comics Curmudgeon is the most important of my daily blog rounds.

Get Fuzzy has always been over my head. Every once in a great while it will make me crack a smile, but otherwise the puns just seem forced.
