Book Pirates!

posted by on October 1 at 13:47 PM

Tele-Read says that Peter Sunde, co-founder of torrent site The Pirate Bay, has requested that someone send him a Kindle. I predict that if Sunde finds a way to get pirated books onto a Kindle, it will double the sales of the thing.

In other e-book news, Sony is supposed to make a major e-book related announcement tomorrow at 6 pm ET. I hope it involves book pirates.

I'm happy to pay for e-property but I would love it if the pirates can come up with an easy crack for the Amazon ebook DRM; because then they might give it up, as they have with their MP3 downloads.

That (and waiting for a price drop) is what's keeping me from buying a Kindle.

I'm told (not having a Kindle myself) that Kindle books are basically just Mobipocket books by another name, and the existing cracks for Mobi books will work on Kindle files if you substitute your Kindle serial number for the Mobi device ID in the crack execution.

I imagine that the Sony news will involve its deal with borders.com. Just a theory. currently you can only get books directly through Sony, but Borders.com is supposed to be able to sell e books soon (like any day).
