The Light of Angelica

One of the greatest women (and humans) in the world…

…Anjelica Huston, is not only terrified of Palin but has an important insight about the nature (and danger) of her celebrity:

I think people are looking at the election as a reality show. I think people have forgotten that this is about the presidency of the United States. They are looking at this like (reality TV show) Living Lohan or The Osbournes or something.

The Palins! It all makes sense to me now. The mystery behind Trig’s birth, the pregnant teenage daughter, her reluctant redneck boyfriend, the troubled trooper (testing his taser on a boy), the affair, the drama at the snow machine dealership, the wolf hunting with dad, and on and on—a branch of the presidential race has become a reality TV show. How could I not see this? It’s so obvious.

How could you not see it? Well, you know - Italian tits and concrete CAN obscure one's vision. It's so obvious.

Sharon Osbourne herself said something pretty funny and right on about Palin though. She said it was like the plot to some bad Lifetime movie, where this nobody woman somehow ascends to the presidency. I don't know. It was funnier when she said it.

that's not really an insight, charles. that's WHY the GOP picked her - her life is a soap opera - and they think americans are rubes.

@4 - "and they think americans are rubes."

Well, after all, the extremely wealthy and the extremely stupid represent the two sides of the Republican base.

Thanks for reminding us of the existence of The Grifters, Charles. Gotta see it again soon. Very soon.

There's more to it than that. The American Dream has changed, and this election is the first to reflect that.

As the nation has lost jobs that are a steady career progression, or at least a relatively flat worker/managerial structure, we compensated by having ever more glorious dreams of being the one to win the tournament and claim all the prizes. You see a pervasive winner-take-all format across many fields, with a few superstars up top and most killing themselves at the bottom to win access to big glamour.

When Americans no longer had a realistic chance at the old American Dream (a house with two fruit trees and a picket fence) they shifted to a small chance at outsized opulence. One way this showed up and was reinforced was in the creation of reality shows, where anyman could win disproportionate gains.

If you think about it, this election is another reflection of the same trend. There are two extremely charismatic, recently unknown candidates in the field, competing for the huge prize. The strivers who methodically worked their way up are from the old system, where that was possible. And they're basically background.

I LOVE Angelica Huston. I first realized I was attracted to ladies when my cousins took me to see "The Addams Family" at age 11. So sexy.

I've been telling my friends that after Palin loses I'd happily watch a "Growing up Palin" reality show set in Alaska!

As soon as I heard the Trig story, I remembered the last Desperate Housewives episode I watched where Bree fakes a pregnancy and ships her pregnant daughter out of town...Is Mark Cherry writing this?

If you've come this far in insight, buddy, here's another secret: Each character in this election adds to the exciting drama.

You're feeding into the gossip and working to keep the reality of this election viewed as something superficial by focusing on ridiculing only one of the players.

Of course MOST I said MOST Americans look at elections as theater. For decades MOST I said MOST Americans have never known a day of want, life threatening hunger, life threatening danger, or abject poverty.

What's even more of a factor is MOST I said MOST Americans rode the gravy train of extra money over the last few decades and let the elected officials in DC do as they pleased as long as the Pork came home.

The evening tabloid TV shows won't shut UP about Palin. But their coverage seems to tip towards not that she's a bad idea and oddly insane like brit brit or might have showed off her shaved vag, but that she is has risen to stardom and should have praise!? But then I guess that falls under the "rube" aspect...

it's the "winning the lottery" concept. it's what all w.t. dream about, and that is her fan base, after all.
