Well sure, if I owned 10 mansions, a private jet and a trophy wife who dresses in $300,000 dresses, I'd think that the economy was just peachy too!
The Middle Class earns 3-5 million a year right?
Could I just mention to you, in a moment of seriousness, that I spent five-and-a-half years in a prison cell. I didn't talk to my broker. I didn't trade T-bills. I didn't read the Financial Times even once. And I spent those five-and-a-half years because I love this country, not because I was looking for a fundamentally sound personal or national economy when I got out.
joe biden is turning into a real badass. i like that guy. john mccain is a total psycho.
*Preemptive John Bailo comment here*
This is good. They should use the worsening financial crisis like Bush used terrorism. Scare the hell out of the American People, and then say that the other guy will let the worst imaginable come to pass. Except in this case, it's true.
@1: Cindy's earrings were worth 280k alone. the rest of the outfit, including necklace, bracelet, watch, dress, shoes, and diamond-encrused ben wa balls, was only 20k.
let's not distort, please. presidential campaigns are about honesty & respect for your opponent.
Biden's closing line was killer.
@5: except that the dominoes are falling, and obama can't stop the fallout, either.
cheerleading the economy is the job of politicians. obama can't say that we're headed for a depression. you have to sell optimism. stupid people (AKA americans) can't handle the truth.
@8: There are some impacts that the President and Congress can make: imposing a regulatory framework that increases investor confidence, providing for some level of assistance to families out of work, promoting economic development that does not buy into bubble economies, better control over runaway markets, and so forth.
If the mouths of investment firms weren't solidly around Republican cocks, there may have been some hope that we could have reined in this bubble before it burst.
I'm amazed that the everyday people of "red state" America think that Republicans give one single thought for them. Unless you are a multi-millionaire, YOU'RE NOT IMPORTANT TO THEM! Don't believe their lies.
Here's the key difference between the parties:
The Democrats want to help everyone -- even the people you hate.
The Republicans tell you they hate the same people you do. (But really, unless you're REALLY rich, they hate you too!)
Sorry... had to get that out of my system.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn't run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well. Unless I ran into John McCain." - Joe muthafukkin BIDEN
biden has some teeth, that was a good line.
To be honest, I've always thought Biden was one of the worst public speakers in the Democratic party. I agree with him 90% of the time, but he normally bores me to death. I really thought he'd be a bad choice for VP.
But I have to say, so far he's done quite well. His speeches have been shorter and more forceful than usual for him. We've all been obsessing over the psycho-drama that is Sarah Palin, and Biden has largely fallen off the radar. But when I have seen clips of him, he has been solidly right on the money, every time. He has been doing exactly what a VP candidate should be doing, and doing a much better job than I would have guessed. If he keeps this up, I may have to withdraw my earlier worries.
@12: "Biden has some teeth" -- is that another one of your digs at Senator McCain's advanced age? Hell, he has more years of wisdom in that goiter than most of you sloggers have ...
Damn. Palin's got nothing on Biden. "Unless I ran into John McCain". Lulz!
@5
YES. FEAR rules the day, and the dems need to use it more effectively.
Unfortunately, there's nothing they could do to improve the economy. But the seachange may help the market mood.
@10,
Very nice summation.
Whenever I hear someone describe the economy as "fundamentally sound", I always want to ask them what key indicators would have to look like for them to say "Whoa! We're in trouble!".
Wow McBush proclaims that the ecomomy is doing great and then the Dow plummets 504 points. Or should the headline read, Dow plummets 504 points due to prospect of McBush presidency.
