Sheryl, we're with you! Just know that I can walk (have you in my thoughts) and chew gum (snark at Double-Wide Palin's predicaments) at the same time.

Is there a specific charity you'd recommend we support? Is Red Cross best or is there a local non-profit? Baton Rouge United Way? Just give the word and I'll make a donation. Stay well and good luck!

Send some to India, too, JTC. (See original thread if you have no idea what that means.)

Tip: To avoid getting pepper sprayed, obey the cops and stop setting fires and breaking windows.

Latest news on Palin from ABC is juicy. They're going down! Palin won't be the VP pick by the end of the convention.

Hey raindrop:

I was taking notes. In a notebook. Far from the protestors. If that's grounds for pepper-spraying, I hope somebody walks up and pepper-sprays you next time you post a comment.

@5: I was referring to the anarchist protesters generically, not you specifically. I should have noted that. Sorry.

Accepted. I'm just still kind of burny and short-tempered. Pardon.

Why is everyone afraid to criticize the fundamental flaw in the way Louisiana is run? Parishes? Come on. Liturgical subdivisions are fine for filling the collection plate, but how can even the most competent parish priest deal with a hurricane? Do the County governments in Louisiana just sit on their asses through all this? And what if you're not Catholic?

Nicely said, Dan. Am anxiously awaiting news regarding your need for tap shoes.

Hang tuff, Sheryl. There are lots of folks sending you good wishes, myself included.

Maybe what raindrop means is "Never question authority ever. Or take notes on it, because they might thing you're questioning them and then you'll get pepper sprayed."

She probably endorses rendition and torture (cuz, ya know, it's war) too.

Sheryl, when third world countries cut down all their up-land forests and then whine and moan when yearly monsoon rains flood the low lands, no one really gets too upset, they send some aid, some food, some toothpaste and prepare to do it again next year, nothing wrong with helping some one. New Orleans/Baton Rouge/Gulf coast USA last time I checked were not in a third world country. It's time to stop pretending we can build, pave, live any old where and not deal with the natural world in all its power. Hurricanes happen in the tropic south, you're an adult deal with that reality and stop the whining about the weather!

Thomas (#4)-
Thanks for the link. I've always thought the name Jake Tapper sounded like a porn name.

@8, A parish in Louisiana is the equivalent to a county. It has nothing to do with the catholic church. It's left over from the French and Spanish colonies that originally formed Louisiana.

Sargon, any place worth living has its own set of risks. The west coast suffers awful earthquakes. New York and Washington, D.C. will continue to be targets of terrorism. And droughts, floods, blizzards, will increasingly wreak havoc as global warming throws our climate off kilter.

This country is not worth living in if Louisiana is not part of its union. It has more diversity, history, and culture than any square block of Seattle.

If you drive a car, you owe Louisiana.
If you consume sugar, you owe Louisiana.
If you listen to modern American music, you owe Louisiana.

I hope you knocked on wood when you typed your awful post. Because remember that earthquake in Vancouver last week? Well, that could happen in Seattle at any moment. If and when it does, I hope your ass is pinned beneath the viaduct and you die a slow death.

This country is better because Louisiana is a part of it.

I hope the earth swallows you whole.

Dear Nola seatac:

Don't worry. The folks up in the
Pacific Northwest love to criticize other peole not noticig the plank in their own eye. When they have the Big One, with tremblors knocking down half the buildings, andhighways, so you can't even get from 90% of Seattle to a hospital, and when the lava fow fills up the Kent Valley with a wall of red hot lava and debris 400 feet high moving 100 mph....they'll get this whole "United" States thing. Till then they are as oblivious as third graders to their own brand of ignorance which they like to pass off as a charming kind of snarkiness.

The very idea anyone living i Earthquake land would lecture others on where they live is laughable. Unfortunately, the locals here are blind to the ironic conundrum in which they place themselves.

And don't talk about who contributed all jazz and blues or else you're going to be caught in what of those ultra ignorant chauvinistic rants about Quincy Jones Hendrix and Bing Crosby.

(NB: they all left asap never to come back).

@10: You're wrong. I don't. But I don't condone anarchy, got a problem with that?
Raindrop is also a gay dude, who is just ever so gently right-of-center in his political dispositions and embellishes the Slog echo chamber with a refreshing voice.

Sheryl's letter is a curious contrast to mainstream news reports that the damage, while widespread, is not as bad as the damage from Katrina.
