Y’all Are Disenfranchisin’ Me!

posted by on September 23 at 14:59 PM

I noticed that Eli took some flak for yesterday’s post about voter registrations being mysteriously “canceled.”

I would just like to say that I, a registered voter, checked on that website as Eli suggested, and was I there? NO! And I was all, “HEY!” Where did my voter registration go? Answer the question, Secretary of State Sam Reed. ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!

Oh, you’re just going to stand there and laugh? Sure. Laugh it up. You’re a real piece of work, Secretary of State Sam Reed. JUST WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU HAVE TO HIDE BEHIND THOSE BEADY LITTLE EYES!? HMMM?

[Note: Please don’t bother to comment and let me know that I could “answer the question” myself with one phone call. That takes all the fun out of yelling. Thank you.]

Oh my word the system is broken. I tried to look up my registration and I couldn't find it. Curses. I pledge to rectify this immediately

According to Sound Politics' searchable page of the state voter database, the Lindy West registration at THIS address, from Sept. 2006, was canceled:
MATTHEWS AVE NE SEATTLE

But the Lindy West registration at THIS address, from May 2005, is still active:
SUMMIT AVE E SEATTLE

(Both have the same birthdate in 1982, but I won't post that. Or the middle name.)
Unsure why the old one would remain, but not the new one. The new address is in a different legislative district.

Oh, here's the link where you can look up yourself (or anyone else):
http://soundpolitics.com/voterlookup.html
The information is generally trustworthy. All the info is publicly disclosable.
There's one bug: If you're searching only by name, don't hit "enter" after punching in the name. You'll get an error message unless you AlSO select a county.
Just click on "search by name" instead if you don't care to winnow down by county.

On October 4, you will have to start taking your voter registration form all the way south to Kent.

Might want to register BEFORE October 4th.

That includes CHANGING the voter address for your voter registration.

Not to worry, the Republican Party plans to challenge your voter registration if you move and totally disenfranchise you - that's electoral speak for You Can't Vote.

Everyone should verify their registrations before Oct 4th, the deadline for new registrations.

I've analyzed the statewide voter registration database (VRDB). Between January 2006 and June 2008, the incumbent Republican Secretary of State cancelled ~900,000 registrations while ~500,000 new voters were added -- for a net loss of ~400,000 registrations.

My opponent has been far too modest about his efforts to clean the VRDB.

It makes no sense that we have fewer registered voters today than 2 years ago. Our population is growing. Record numbers of new voters are being registered.

The deceased, felon, and duplicate registrations are called out separately. I'm referring to the 3/4ths of cancellations that are not explained.

My campaign will continue to press forward, trying to explain this oddity. I've filed open records request, still unfulfilled, for the VRDB logs. The incumbent must explain and justify his actions, if only to put our concerns to rest.
