Wimps, Weaklings, Pussies, Pansies, Scroats, Sissies…

…or as we call them during election season, “conservatives.”

Nervous people ‘are likely to be right-wing’

People who are easily startled by loud bangs or gruesome pictures are more likely to vote for right-wing policies compared to calmer people who take a more liberal approach to life, according to a psychological study of political beliefs.

The findings support the idea that personality type influences political attitude, which could explain why voting differences appear to be entrenched. “Although political views have been thought to arise largely from individuals’ experiences, recent research suggests a possible biological basis. We present evidence that variations in political attitudes correlate with psychological traits,” said John Hibbing of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Interesting... so, people who are easily scared vote conservative because they are afraid of change and/or because the Republicans have created an image where they can better protect us from the big, scary world. Funny how liberals have the reputation for being sissies and nancy boys.

I think there are a few Republicans I know who would not take too kindly to the suggestion that they vote Republican because they are easily frightened. This should be fun...

So Dan, given your recent postings about the election we can assume, based on this study, you are a conservative?

Like BoxofBirds @1, I, too, should be a conservative repulican.

But I'm not.

My fears - my sense of doom and gloom - are quite real.

Was talking with my black neighbors yesterday. They fear that if Obama loses, there will be race riots like we've never seen before. Bless their hearts, they promised to protect my fearful white ass.

Reminds me of this two-year old story about a longitudinal study that showed that whiny children were more likely to grow up and adopt conservative views, becoming "rigid young adults who hewed closely to traditional gender roles and were uncomfortable with ambiguity."

The conservative response at the time was a uniform: "I'm not whiny! I'm not! I'm not! I'm not!"

Michelle Malkin reportedly held her breath till she passed out.

Dan, please refer back to your many comments about "Pussies". You cannot say one thing and then do something different especially when politics are concerned.

SO if this is correct, how do we nonetheless convert some of those people to vote Democratic?

Or is this preemptive excuse making for losing?

@8

"We"? What the fuck are you talking about? "Whitey video PC" is not a member of any Democratic "we" I've ever heard of. Get lost.

Mass quantities of Valium dumped into the Mississippi River would make this country a better place, you say?

You just remember you said that during the next civil war, when you're curled up in a ball in the corner of your laundry room, suckin' your toes while Terry frantically packs the car for Canada.

I was just watching this Ted talk yesterday:
Jonathan Haidt: The real difference between liberals and conservatives
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jonathan_haidt_on_the_moral_mind.html
pretty interesting that the same traits separating liberals and conservatives appear in every culture. It also makes it obvious that a bridge between the two groups would more logically come from the more open minded all questioning liberal side of the fence.

Scroats? I've never heard of that one...

@7: he also said "scroats" which was the "pussy" fairness counter balance.

@13: You need to listen to the Savage Lovecast. Starting somewhere last year (I'm thinking it was Sept/Oct of last year when I was listening to those eps).

But the gist is that someone took Dan to task for using "pussy" as a derogative meaning "wimpy" when we all know that pussies are strong awesome organs filled with muscle that squeeze out whole human beings and regularly take poundings during sex and then come back and ask for more. The suggestion was to instead call wimps "scrotums" because those are weak and shrivel up and retract in fear, etc. Somewhere along the way, it got shortened to "scroats".

Of course, this doesn't stop Dan from calling people pussies from time to time (and I'm pretty sure you did do it on an earlier podcast before the first call about it), but now he has to go through the whole disclaimer each time, and take calls and e-mails on it on the Lovecast. It's one of those Lovecast themes, like Pit Bulls and Every Child... here on Slog.

So now everyone with anxiety disorders is a proto-crypto-Conservo-Republican? This excludes people who've been made into nervous wrecks thanks to the last 8 years of Bush Hell? I'm easily startled by 'loud bangs' such as gun shots or the beginnings of an earthquake, and thanks to an childhood filled with abuse I leap into the air if someone unseen comes up behind me & speaks or touches me. These purported 'findings' seem like pure unadulterated horseshit concocted to fulfill yet another specious agendum.

Obviously they're vulnerable to Republican scare tactics.
