The McCain camp is bullshitting about Ms. Palin. They deny the "rumors" of her AIP membership by pointing to her voter registration. Even if she was registered as a Republican all those years, her party registration for voting purposes doesn't mean she couldn't be a member of the AIP or both the AIP and the GOP. From what I've seen, they never directly answer the question whether she was a member of the AIP.

This is the man we want in charge of the annual White House Easter Egg Hunt?

When does the countdown to her withdrawal begin?

Right now, on All Things Considered, Brownback and Santorum are effusing about how great she is. She's a goner.

If you guys don't hold the right responsible for this nomination, no one will. Even Keith Olbermann has been too cowed by the hurricane to go after Palin.

Who will produce the ad with the inevitable picture of McCain at the craps table and the voice over: "He's a risk taker, a high-stakes gambler whose most important decision so far is to choose an untested unknown as his vice president. Is this who we want as commander-in-chief?"

So, in 1995 Todd Palin had a second term City Council woman as his wife but decided that when she decided to run for Mayor of Wasilla (mayor campaigns last at least a year, even in BFE AK), he wanted the State of AK to break away from the US. For 7 years he felt that way by remaining an active member of the AIP, but then, when the wife decided to move up from small town politics to try for lieutenant gov, he decided to change his politic(al identity).

wow. wikipedia states AIP wants to UN to solve the legality of AK being in the US. My mind is blown... a fringe third party, one which advocates the UN getting involved in internal US matters, neigh, US sovernity matters has his wife welcomed by the GOP ?!?

Good Lord Alice, which way is back into the looking glass?

Was it a family membership?

It usually is.

Which makes her, as an obedient fundamentalist wife, in agreement with them.

Alaska has always attracted a whole lot of crazy from Outside. I call it the end of the road syndrome.

Back in college, some chums of mine wanted to take over the student government -- for the sake improving comedy -- so they started the Antarctic Liberation Front (ALF). I think they gained something like 30% of the seats.

Now, I am glad that I never joined them, would that it come back to haunt me!

Strangely though...it survives to this day, and involves...Eliot Spitzer??

http://www.coyoteblog.com/coyote_blog/2004/12/eliot_spitzer_a.html

"OK, but what is this Antarctica thing? Back when I was an undergrad at Princeton, one of my fondest memories was of a bizarre Student Body Governing Council (USG) election. The previous USG administration, headed by none other than fellow Princetonian Eliot Spitzer, had so irritated the student body that, for the first time in memory, the usually apathetic voting population who generally couldn't care less who their class president was actually produced an energetic opposition party. Even in his formative years, Spitzer was expert in using his office to generate publicity, in this case frequent mentions in the student newspaper that finally drove several students over the edge."

Lighten up folks.
Most of my friends have said "ya sure you betcha" when asked shouldn't we just secede and join BC in Canada. So your outrage is so faux. Voters in Scranton or Youngstown probably focus more on the facts that she likes guns and snowmobiling and took out a corrupt state party chair AND a corupt governor. You wanted outside the beltway? You said DC experience doesn't count? You wanted change?
You got it.

The distraction of her mini scandals means Obama is not getting his economic message out.
Sure liberals hate her, with reason. But we already got the liberal vote nailed down, I would suspect. It's those other voters we need to get.

@13 - you are right on. Nitpicking on things like this is just preaching to the Obama choir. What everyone who wants to see Obama in the White House needs to be doing is instead focusing on the moderate and swing voters. They should be pointing out to undecideds what is wrong with McCain's message and what is right with Obama's.

Trust me, you're not going to win over the white middle class moderates by attacking Palin's husband.

And @11 Jiberish also nailed it about Alaska and the end of the road syndrome. There are plenty of normal happy, well-adjusted Alaskans (I'd like to think I'm one of them), but I am well-aware that my home-state is also a magnate for crazies and fringe groups.

BTW Alaska did elect a governor from the AK Independence Party back in the 1980s- Wally Hickel. Though he ran on this ticket he was really a Republican (and still is) who just used the independent party as a way to get elected because he had lost the primary to a pro-choice Republican woman. He doesn't believe in AK seceding from the union. Only the most fringe of the fringe believe in that. AK Independents are really just your standard libertarians. Most states have a good number of them (remember Ross Perot supporters in 1992!?)

Yeah, and don't forget that a lot of the crazies who support her have at least, shall we say, lukewarm to supportive things to say about secession. (See: American South.)

Anyone who says that Todd's party is for the purpose of secession have not done any research. The party's charter is to return federal lands back to the state. One may ask why? Simple, the us government (thats everyone - dems and rep) are so slow in making a decision. Alaska wants to drill for oil that we all use, and remember tires for autos gas or electric are made from oil.

Count me as a crazy with supportive things to say about secession. It's unfortunate that a procedure for leaving the union was not written into the Constitution. Roaches check in, but they don't check out.

Secession is a much better way than democracy for getting the government you want. If we had a smooth secession process in place, bad federal governance would disappear tomorrow.

The Slog should support secession - a bunch of southern states would have probably bailed on the USA in the 1960s and wouldn't things be dandy now?

What is the big deal about secession? I'm from Vermont and people have been talking about it there for years.

They can't dump her. It would be tantamount to throwing the election. Look at what McGovern did against a known crook and warmongerer, one of the most unpopular political figures of all time: he got SLAUGHTERED. McCain will stick with this bimbo all the way, there's no other options. To dump her would be to put a big "incompetent" sign over McCain's head.

So we're going to have Sarah Palin to kick around for a while. Goodie!

I knew from the start that Todd Palin was trouble to watch out for. He's a gen-yoo-wine hillbilly. I like the working man just as much as the next guy, but Todd is a special case: part-time oil rigger, DWI, likes to shoot things out of helicopters, crazy right-wing secessionist, looks like he might be short some of his teeth. I encourage people to goad him into uttering some inevitable slurs; I'm sure we can get some "n*gger"s and "w*tback"s and maybe some "ch*nk"s out of him if we try. Back in the 1960s the Republicans worked very hard to drive the John Birchers out of the party. Looks like they're back, in NASCAR clothing. Todd Palin is going to bring this ticket down, that's my theory.

Remember Obama's comment about temperament? So now we have an elderly hothead with questionable judgment and a hair-trigger temper (and a history of cancer) teamed up with an untested-on-the-lower-48-scene, stubborn my-way-or-the-highway linebacker of a VP candidate. I'd say that's one heck of a ticket for the GOP.

There's nothing "radical" about the AIP. The bottom line is that it wants another vote by Alaskans on Statehood or "other". It also favors minimal honest govt. Hawaii has it's own "secessionist" movement as does Texas. We fought an entire civil war over secession. It's an American tradition, and technical right by the way of any state to secede. Alaska is working through its place as our newest state. Every other state has gone through the same thing.
But Sarah Palin has never been a member of the AIP. Todd Palin, an individual apart from his wife, was a registered AIP member for 2 election cycles. He's been an Independent since 2002. But again, he is Todd, She is Sarah-2 different people, independent-minded people.

Todd Palin is the very model of accomplished "Blue Collar". Those of you who seem to think he's some hillbilly only reveals the ignorance that all Obamaphiles share. Todd Palin is mainstream America. We've had the power-woman as first lady. Now we're going to have the first dude, a guy who's shaping up as an advocate for Blue Collar workers. Vocational training. Look for it, coming soon to your neighborhood.

Of course it's a big deal when Obama is denounced for not wearing a flag lapel pin sometimes!

The founder of the Alaska Independence Party -- a group that has been courted over the years by Sarah Palin, and one her husband was a member of for roughly seven years -- professed his "hatred for the American government" and cursed the American flag as a "damn flag."

The AIP founder, Joe Vogler, made the comments in 1991, in an interview that's now housed at the Oral History Program in the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

It's worth pondering how big a deal it would be if Obama had ever courted the support of a group whose head had said this kind of thing about America and her flag.
