OMG! The suspense is killing me—I mean, so much hinges on this! I just wish there was some way to know in advance who won tonight's presidential debate! Oh. Although the fate of tonight's presidential debate in Mississippi remains very much up in the air, John McCain has apparently already won it—if you believe an Internet ad an astute reader spotted next to this piece in the online edition of the Wall Street Journal this morning. "McCain Wins Debate!" declares the ad which features a headshot of a smiling McCain with an American flag background.

I used to get excited about presidential debates.

In 2004, when Bush just blinked into the camera like a retarded monkey, with the cognitive part of his brain (such as it is) completely shutting down, I cheered with joy.

And then he still won anyway. This was inconceivable to me. It told me that at least one of the following are true:

1) Joe Sixpack doesn't watch debates

2) Americans are SO stupid and ignorant that intellectual capability is actually a hindrance to getting elected.

3) The election was rigged and our votes don't matter anyway.

This may be a stupid question, but does an official actually declare a debate winner? That would be kind of awesome. I want to see them hold up the hand of the winner Rocky-style, and not have to hear the loser's pundits talking on and on about how their candidate came off better.

The real thing I've been worried about is that if McCain lowers the expectations on his performance enough, people will be talking about his "surprisingly good performance despite a lack of time to prepare" and he'll manage to get victory declared if he just manages to not drool too much on camera. Considering how ticked off the media is at this point I'm hoping that doesn't happen after all, and if this gets picked up on enough maybe that will further shoot that possibility in the foot.
