What Gloria Steinem Said

posted by on September 4 at 13:43 PM

In today’s LA Times.

Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton’s candidacy stood for — and that Barack Obama’s still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, “Somebody stole my shoes, so I’ll amputate my legs.”

[…]

I don’t doubt her sincerity. As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assn., she doesn’t just support killing animals from helicopters, she does it herself. She doesn’t just talk about increasing the use of fossil fuels but puts a coal-burning power plant in her own small town. She doesn’t just echo McCain’s pledge to criminalize abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade, she says that if one of her daughters were impregnated by rape or incest, she should bear the child. She not only opposes reproductive freedom as a human right but implies that it dictates abortion, without saying that it also protects the right to have a child.

Read the whole Palin-thumping piece over here.

Um, but that's all they'll care about.

A Palin needs a Rush like a fish needs a bisexual.

Re sieg heil (way below) ... that was Little Ms. Hockeypuck's salute to a worthy adversary, the sainted secularist who was canonized in Denver last week. Before an adoring run-of-demille cast of thousands. In a plastic temple for styrofoam gods. In a scene reminiscent less of DeMille on a backlot than of Leni Riefenstahl at Nuremberg.

I love Gloria. Thx for posting. If I add the LA Times to my daily media diet, I'll not have time to do anything else.

She's come a long way, baby. And baby. And baby.

When I heard her intro Friday morning my thoughts turned immediately to Stephanie Miller's dumb dad (aka Goldwater's dumbest mistake) and to McGovern's Eagleton.

Then I got my mind right with thoughts of Great Republican Token Women of Yesteryear, the holy troika of Katherine Harris, Helen Chenoweth, and (you mean Harriet Miers wasn't available?!) Harriet Miers.

In other words, SP had a low bar to jump last night, and she jumped just by not melting into an amniotic puddle on the floor.

Give her speech a B, and vote her onto Student Council. Hell, give her a B+.

But keep her away from delusions of grandeur & Thatcher (the Second Coming of Maggie? R U shitting me?) and keep her away from anything consequential, aside from the kids, the guns, and the snowmobile.

And is anyone surprised that Mayor Hockey's metropolis of Wa-silly (Hussein-Obama pronunciation) is in the Matanuska Valley?

And was anyone else surprised last Friday and last nite when our little pit bull (you can put lipstick on a pitbull, said Ann Richards, but it's still a pitbull) was maligning 'old boys' clubs' while standing near wrinkley old John McCain?
