What A Real Media Revolt Would Look Like

The media revolts against the McCain campaign’s attempts to restrict access to a Palin photo-op, says the NYT. After attempting to keep all reporters out of a photo-op between Palin and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the McCain camp relents and allows a single reporter to observe the photo-op.

Hm.

Maybe it’s time for the media to pull all reporters—print and television, photographers and videographers—off the McCain campaign. Entirely. Press coverage of a campaign is supposed to be a two-way street. The candidate wants to get his mug on television, he wants his rallies and speeches broadcast and written up, he wants to use the media to reach the voters. In exchange for allowing themselves to be used, the candidate is supposed to make himself available to reporters and anchors, answer questions, hold press conferences. The McCain campaign isn’t holding up its end of the deal. It’s using the media to reach voters without making Palin and, increasingly, McCain available for questioning.

Why should the media play along? The media should pull reporters off the McCain campaign and refuse to cover rallies or speeches until McCain and Palin start holding press conferences. Period. You want to reach our viewers and readers? Start answering our questions. Don’t want to answer our questions? We’ll ignore you and your campaign.

Or even better, how about running a headline every day (with no article) that reads something like, "McCain-Palin ticket releases no new information again today" or "McCain-Palin ticket had nothing to say today".

Awesome.

Idealistic....but still awesome.

It would last 4 seconds before Faux News cried ZOMG LIBERAL MEDIA and then the respectables would over report to correct themselves.

What a sad, pussy-whipped state. BRING BACK MUCKRAKING AND ADVOCACY JOURNALISM NOW NOW NOW

It's the sanest, most rational plan of action to take. But were talking about human beings here. Which eliminates the sane and rational options. So - continue breathing.

The problem is the only place you'll find "real media" is left of the dial.

How about starting by refusing to cover the weeklong infomercials they call conventions.

Oh wait, the Stranger had half its staff there, didn't it?

And Obama should then call for the media to treat Palin fairly and allow her to appear on all the Sunday talk shows to give her a chance to fully explain her policies.

It's a great idea, Dan. Should it start with The Stranger/SLOG? And, how do we spread the idea without making it a major media event?

I'm all for it, just trying to figure out how it would happen.

McG-

Obama was the first one to emphatically state that families and children are off limits! Still sour over Clinton, huh? Get the fuck over it!

What if, one outlet decided to do that? Just 1. No actual stories about McCain/Palin. What if that was copied and two then, three decided to follow suit? Would McCain/Palin simply not exist? Hardly, the minute Palin/McCain decided to do a sit-down with a non Fox news person, everyother media outlet would be on them like flies on crap. Good idea though.

Maybe MSM can report about the closed door meeting taking place and how they were expressly prohibited by McC-alin from attending.

@6
But the problem is that she and the Mccain camp are too afraid to have her appear on those Sunday talk shows so they have refused such offers. They fear that she might get asked some challenging policy questions and actually pressed for real answers.

Does anyone realise that NONE of the issues effecting the citizens of the nation are being discussed? This has degenerated into what it always does...back to high school..I'm not talking to you, because you're not talking to me?!? Wait until the foreign press prints the comments of the leaders she spoke with (posed with) She's already being Nixonian (Dick Cheney in a dress). Obama's already going over his Inagurial speech, you know it's gonna rock!

Absolutely right of Palin, no one allowed until they learn to treat people with respect and report events with fairness and accuracy, get it?, I suppose you won't.

The fix is in, single debate with Biden & rules have been changed to see that Palin doesn't have to respond with anything but pleasntries.
McCain's probably gonna win, since Dems are taking the attacks, both overt & subliminal only slightly less passively than Kerry took Swiftboat.
The Dumbing of America theme should be pressed without risking the charge of elitism for doing so, a slipper ledge, but necessary. McCain, like Bush, near bottom of his class, & brags about it. What was it, 6 colleges Palin bumped around in. What were her grades?
Do we really want another super-dumb president even if she is in a skirt & knows how to look cute?
And work harder to find incriminating dirt. I'm sure they've gone after Obama & found nothing, nothing whatever (except, of course, NO EXPERIENCE and not a great FAMILY like Palin (& McCain with his hunred million dollar gal thanks to peddling beer). Get tough, Dems, or you'll be as left behind as are the taxpayers who are bailing out the rich guy bankers, a problem that could be solved by writing off citizens'mortgages rather than having taxpayers pay off at full value what's owed to the big boys. Those Congress spines are so limp that it's a wonder that they can get to their feet, & it's time for another vacation while the war goes on & the economy is the wreck they leave behind...
Looks Bad,

The McCain campaign is attempting to "run out the clock". Thirty percent of voters begin voting by mail this week without any real knowledge of Sarah Palin other than her celebrity status.

Points:

She has lied and continues to lie about the Bridge to Nowhere.
She has lied about taking earmarks as Mayor of Wassila.
She has lied about agreeing to cooiperate with the troopergate investigation.
She lied about her teleprompter malfunctioning during her acceptance speech.
And she lied about the most simple thing - about accepting the nomination from John McCain - with 2 versions: one where she accepted immediately because she is wired not to blink and a second explanation where she polled her family.

She has not been subjected to meeting with the press other than People Magazine, ABCs Charles Gibson and Fox's Sean Hannity's advertorial interview with no hard questions.

The press does not owe her any deference. They owe it to the American people to make sure that she is subjected to much more rigorous vetting than the McCain campaign performed.

They need this information before they vote!

I can’t understand how so few people have made such an impact on this election, it stands to reason that the media is truly that liberally biased … but what I really want to know is that when this election is over and the media realizes how far from mainstream American political philosophy they stand will they stop trying to brainwash the public? Because, and please remember where you heard it first… it isn’t going to be close, not even a little bit, McCain/Palin are going to win by a landslide. That is not the outcome that I am hoping for, but it is the reality of our situation, the media has force-placed Barack Obama into this race and left behind any real contest to be fought out over the issues. America will not vote for this man, he does not represent their ideals or philosophies, Hillary would have won handily, consequently not the outcome I was hoping for either. Someday when these two useless parties, being used as bases of operations for lobbyists and speech writers, are finally overthrown I wonder will we let the idiots whom have left us with nothing better to watch on television than reality TV pick our system of government for the next 250 years, or will we stand up for ourselves and demand that our way of life be represented fairly and legitimately by those other than stock brokers and idiot celebrities who have nothing better to do on election years than criticize the one candidate whom has probably led the closest example of a common life to have been brought into the political arena since Andrew Jackson… that by the way is why it will not be close, as we sit around clinging to our guns and religion we have the smallest flicker of hope that in some small way SHE will honor us with representation rather than the obscure glance from her crystal tower… the cool thing is that I don’t even have to agree with her on the issues I can just recognize that she is not the drug addled super-rich celebrity pointing fingers and droning on about how much better life would be if we all just got along, but she also isn’t the high-hat aristocratic crook looking down over her fiefdom for a poll that will show her what to say next, son of the last 30 year senator. She’s not the best answer, not by far, but she is a step in the right direction… HERE’S TO THE REVOLUTION, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

I'm amazed at the American people. It's not Palin's fault...she's a nincompoop who's trying to get away with whatever she can. If she answers questions incorrectly or incomprehensively, so be it. It's hard to believe that the great American public can be bamboozled to believe that this hockey-mom would be an appropriate vp or God forbid, president. Obama and Biden may have some negatives but I can't believe that the citizens of this country are so stupid to allow a McCain-Palin ticket to happen! It's really frightening.

Hmmm. The thought is lovely, but then there's the thought that the advertising dollars play in determining programming. And we know most of the heavy advertisers are not exactly among the liberal elements and don't really care about fairness and journalistic ethics. It is so sad that we can't have real journalism, rather than people who seem to be reading scripted monologues. I for one would LOVE for the press to have more say in what they do/do not cover and frankly think the McCain Campaign needs a little spanking. They never seem to really answer the questions!

The problem is that there has not been real journalism since long before the second Nixon administration.

Ever since Woodward and Bernstein, so-called journalists dropped any idea of finding and reporting news and concentrated on bringing down the president ... but only if the president is republican.

If the media stops covering the "cocky wacko" and Mr."Imbombieda". where will we get the comic relief. It's plain that the liberal press is secretly working for Them- if we don't see them we might not notice what idiots they really are.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Palin is a ZERO. It doesn't matter how much media coverage she gets. She is the Britney Spears of Politics, with all apologies to Britney.

I used to like McCain. It is kind of sad to see how much of his record he has squandered to appeal to the fringe.

I would like to see the days politicians, like Lincoln, had to get out on a stump and talk to the voters. I could CARE LESS whether the media covers Sara Palin. It has been a long time since we could believe anything they say anyway. WHO CARES??????
