Ugh, my friend sent me that blog last week and it almost made me barf. It's not funny, because it makes more fun of disabled children than it does of Sarah Palin. I mean, come on, that's just cheap.

@2: Cheaper than parading your family around the country for political points and getting "outraged" when intelligent people see through your bullshit?

Hey, you're right! It's not funny!

Yeah, Dan! Don't be sexist! Your hateful, enabling, comments against Bristol Palin's uterus are disgusting! Hillary '08!

@3: Yes.

And it's just. not. funny.

And as soon as I get up off the floor and stop giggling I will write a Very Angry Letter to someone.

Young Palin seems amazingly aware & articulate for a 5 month old child, and his spelling levels seem equal to his parents'.

When focusing on issues doesn't work, nothing inspires voters as much as making fun of disabled people. Indeed, THIS is the way to win the swing states.

That is just fucking disgusting. What a low blow to make fun of disabled children.

Keep it up, if you want McCain to win.

Officially: All of you should be ashamed. This is horrible.

I just thought of something.

Anyone have an inkling that this might actually be posted by a right winger to make us look bad? Classic Roveian politics.

Just like the "Trig is actually Sarah Palin's grandson" story, conveniently leaked BY THE GOP(!) before the teen daughter's pregnancy was announced, I suspect this is something put up by some republican geek. Not really hard to imagine is it? I mean just like the "Trig is Sarah's grandson" story, it sparks conservative outrage at the lies and slander of the liberal left. And that controversy takes place right before the GOP has to acknowledge that that the governor has a pregnant unwed teen and her mother made sure she ( and any other teen in the state) didn't get any sex-ed other than abstinence "education". So all eyes are off of the governor's failed policy and on the dishonest liberal media. I doubt that anyone who has any serious political convictions on the democratic side would put the baby Trig website up. Those fucking idiots at Daily Kos fell for the Sarah the grandmother story and looked like liars and now Dan savage is publicizing this website and making democratic supporters look like assholes. Way to go Dan. Ever heard of Rovian tactics?

Agreed. Nobody should die laughing over it, as it is Highly Inappropriate.

As the father of a cognitively disabled daughter, I can't help but think that shit like this makes jack offs think that making fun of "retarded" people is fair game and funny. My daughter has a tough enough time dealing with a list of problems I wouldn't wish on anyone, she simply does not need to see more assholes making fun of her.

I just don't get how people who would never ridicule someone for their race would ridicule someone for being "retarded." Last I checked, non-white people have the ability to fight back and the emotional development to let racist comments roll of their backs. No so easy for a little girl at the playground when someone yells that he doesn't want to be near her because she's funny looking and can't walk right.

God this shit pisses me off.

@21

Some of us have to laugh at the very darkest stuff in life, in order to survive. Some of us, if we didn't find that blog to be mindbendingly hilarious, would be forced to leap from the Aurora bridge.

The fact that your daughter has a disability isn't funny. But laughing about the EXISTENCE of disability. . . if that doesn't work for you, cool, but understand that it does for some of us. It's not malicious, and it's not personal.

And, well, "Pee Oh Dubya" is objectively hilarious.

@22

Who would adopt a retard? That's retarded.

Posted by tasteless | September 11, 2008 10:43 AM

I tried not to laugh, but "terrist fish jabber" did me in.

I haven't looked at the blog itself, but that specific entry makes much more fun of "tarded 'Merica" and our obsession with POWs, fist jabs, and arugula than the developmentally disabled.

Posted by keshmeshi | September 11, 2008 10:45 AM

@25

And, yeah, exactly. The blog isn't making fun of disabled people.

It is using a disabled child to make fun of other people. Specifically, that child's mother.

Surely nobody could have a problem with THAT. ;)

I'm going to hell. I can't stop laughing.

@12:

Well, avoiding talking about issues and focusing solely on personality sure seems to work for the GOP now, doesn't it?

Posted by COMTE | September 11, 2008 11:07 AM
29

@23: The point is, it isn't funny. I'm sorry, but it is just not cool to make fun of disabled people, just like it isn't cool to make fun of black people. And "laughing about the EXISTANCE of disability" is just a dumb excuse.

Man, shit like this leaves me discouraged. It's like saying FUCK constantly.

It simply ain't funny, so why say it except to denigrate others -- and that is really unnecessary.

@29

The point is, it IS funny to some of us! If people say un-politically-correct things about race that are based in some kind of intelligent satire, I'm likely to laugh at that is well. The fact that you don't get how decent people can find such things funny isn't really relevant to the comedy factor, as you are not the arbiter of what is funny.

Honest to gawd, I think there is a satire gene, and many (most?) people don't have it.

Posted by violet_dagrinder | September 11, 2008 12:48 PM

Fuck is the single most expressive word in the English language.

Just sayin'.

Additionally, yes, it is funny. Glad we could settle this.

@34, I laugh at good satire. This does not meet that definition.

Furthermore, it just gives the Republicans ammunition.

I laughed. A lot. I couldn't help myself. I'm going to hell. But I'm going laughing my ass off.

@37:

Ok, you win. Savage was right. It's not funny, and nobody should read it. Thank gawd SOMEbody knows what good satire looks like.

But I don't see how this gives the Repubs ammo. It's just some idiot blogger. Nobody is going to think that Obama would encourage this kind of terrible, horrible, unfunny behavior. How about all of the racist crackers on the other side? Are we really blaming McCain for what they say (aside from the racist cracker who he as chosen as his veep)? I don't think so.

You better start coming up with alot of retard and Palin's daughter is a whore jokes because you're gonna need them for at least the next 4 years. Drawing attention to things like this and attacking Palin's children will be one of the reasons that we will all have to deal with Overlord McCain come January. Thanks, fella!

Posted by seatard | September 11, 2008 1:46 PM

I would say people are missing the point on making fun of disabled children--they are jokes which create a climate which gives other people permission to make nasty jokes and comments to the faces of disabled kids.

And I tell you what, the next time a little disabled girl crys and can't understand why people refuse to sit at a lunch table with her and prefer to laugh and point at her while she is alone at that table, I'll explain that people with hipster and irreverant senses of humor created a climate where jokes about disabilities are acceptable, but never meant the sense of humor to extend to the lunch room.

Posted by Dan | September 11, 2008 2:42 PM

@41

No, this irreverent hipster gets it. And what I would say is, the kids in the lunchroom aren't reading the Slog. Kids (aka humans) are inherently mean, nasty creatures, and anybody who is different will be made fun of. It is up to parents and teachers to teach kids to be kind.

If the parents and teachers are too dumb to recognize the difference between something like Trig's blog, and allowing the kids in their care to be mean to each other. . . well, the kids are all fucked, then.

Posted by violet_dagrinder | September 11, 2008 3:04 PM
43

I would venture to say, Violet, the maybe the father of a disabled child (see Dan's comments) might know a thing or two about this topic, no?

You obviously DON'T get it. People with disabilities and their families know all too well what it is like to live in this world.

Posted by WTF | September 11, 2008 3:45 PM

Maybe if Trig wasn't a disabled baby, and the blogger didn't use the word "'tarded" over and over, it would be mildly amusing. But the blogger isn't just making fun of a little baby. He is making fun of disabled people, hence the pictures of kids with special needs.

Posted by Heybabaloo | September 11, 2008 3:48 PM

@8: You are an ass.
@24: Many people adopt children with disabilities. Because unlike you and idiot #8, they can recogize that is it a person with a disability. Person.
I have spent my life working with people with disabilities; the very best people I know have disabilities. Never do you hear cruel shit like that come out of their mouth. AND, your son/daughter is one car accident, one high fever, one medical mistake away from becoming "retarded." Palin has enough shit to call her on the carpet about. Leave the poor baby alone.

Posted by STLJoy | September 11, 2008 7:43 PM

Yes, the blog is obviously making fun of retarded people. Its just like how that movie Tropic Thunder was making fun of retarded people, not satirizing the simplistic way the mentally disabled are portrayed on film.

In other news, Stephen Colbert is really conservative, every story in the Onion is true, and Jonathon Swift really wants to cook and eat children.

Posted by ferretrick | September 11, 2008 8:05 PM

I think the differences between this attempt at satire and "Tropic Thunder" are pretty obvious.

I laughed and I find it disgusting, you can have it both ways.

I was wondering if someone was going to cross in to this territory.

I laughed because it's so beyond the pale that it gives me something like a release. Whenever I see a joke that is so far removed from what is acceptable I'm moved to hysterical laughter. I think this can probably be explained scientifically but what the fuck do I know? Maybe I'm just awful.
