The Pig
No, he has never put lipstick on a pig, Sen. Barack Obama told David Letterman in an appearance to be broadcast tonight on CBS’s “The Late Show with David Letterman.”“But I think it might be fun to try,” Obama said.
In defense of his critique Tuesday in Virginia of Sen. John McCain’s pitch that he’s a changemaker, Obama said, “It’s a common expression in at least Illinois. I don’t know about in NYC. I don’t know what you put lipstick on here.”
“Keep in mind that technically, had I meant it this way, she would be the lipstick,” Obama added, referring to GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. “The policies of John McCain would be the pig.”
The pig comment might just be one of Obama’s most brilliant maneuvers. For several reasons: one, it put him back on the front page; two, it shows that he has the devious side that Kerry totally lacked; and three, in response to McCain’s charge of sexism, it gave Obama’s campaign a way to negate the expression race card—“gender card.” Don’t be surprised if we see a pig bounce.

that's badass.
Posted by walrus | September 10, 2008 6:40 PMsure man sure
but for the real bounce he should have said " lipstick on a sow"
Posted by Buddy | September 10, 2008 6:43 PMDon't you mean "Don’t be surprised if we see a pig fly?"
Posted by Cookie W. Monster | September 10, 2008 6:44 PMIf anyone will try to make a pig bounce, it will be Letterman--dropping it off a 5-story tower.
Posted by Andy Niable | September 10, 2008 6:46 PMChuck, your analysis is a perfect contrarian indicator. Obama really fucked up.
Posted by mistermix | September 10, 2008 6:49 PMIf that really is exactly how Obama said it, that's ... jesus, that's tremendous. She's the lipstick, McCain's policies are the pig. I've been a fan of Obama as a person for quite a while, but it's one of the few times I've heard Obama the campaigner put something so rightly I wanted to cheer.
He needs to bring that guy -- a mix of Bill Cosby and law professor and James Carville -- to the debates.

Posted by Hal | September 10, 2008 7:04 PMWhat, is lipstick on a pig only okay when McCain says it about hillary?

Posted by Anon | September 10, 2008 7:13 PMThis is the best news I've heard all day. Genius response. We're going to be fine. He's not Dukakis, he's not Kerry. Now I just have to worry about my 4 WaMu accounts.

Posted by Seanford | September 10, 2008 8:51 PMThis campaign is the most hilarious drama ever! Lipstick on the pig, in my opinion. I also liked his response to the neocon "outrage".
"Enough!"
Now I wanna see some bare knuckle brawlin' on the senate floor!
Posted by UnCommonSense | September 10, 2008 9:10 PMI just said "fuck yeah" three times to my laptop.
Posted by Explorer | September 10, 2008 9:17 PMmccain:pig
palin:lipstick
any idiot can understand that. and that's the only undecided voters left.
Posted by maxsolomon@home | September 10, 2008 9:18 PMOkay...
Yesterday: pig = McCain's policy; lipstick = Change
Today: Pig = McCain; lipstick = Palin
Tomorrow: ?
I think Obama is rattled by Palin.
Posted by You_Gotta_Be_Kidding_Me | September 10, 2008 9:37 PMIt's not good sign when your Presidential Candidate is rattled by the other guys Vice Presidential Candidate.
#15, Palin personifies the change in McCain's campaign. She supposedly shook up Alaska and is supposedly going helping bring change to Washington. Do you need everything beyond 6th grade literature topics explained to you?

"Shook up" = Same old corrupt Republican shit.
Posted by Mike in Olympia | September 10, 2008 10:00 PM@16
Wow. With you everything has to end in a personal insult doesn't it?
Posted by You_Gotta_Be_Kidding_Me | September 10, 2008 10:05 PMNot an insult, just a question.
Regardless, I'm not going to feel bad about throwing a lighthearded "insult" at someone who tells people "fuck you" for no real reason and enjoys "poking sticks at people" for fun (ie trolling).
Posted by w7ngman | September 10, 2008 10:33 PMThis is pure Axelrod. Genius.
Posted by Demolator | September 10, 2008 10:44 PMAs a former member of 4H, I think this reaches middle america and wakes us up to the reality that McCain is putting lipstick on the massive debts he's driving the American Middle Class into, trying to convince us they're not pigs.
And yet ... they "oink"!
Posted by Will in Seattle | September 10, 2008 10:54 PMThey're still pigs.
@19
No. You just puppet instead.
Posted by You_Gotta_Be_Kidding_Me | September 10, 2008 11:11 PMI don't puppet. Interestingly enough, other people don't like you.
Posted by w7ngman | September 11, 2008 1:02 AMObama will never recover.
Every woman I know feels it is a sexist insult - of course - all the so cool political savant men can now say, "who gives a shit what they think."
Posted by Larry | September 11, 2008 8:25 AMYou- gotta- be
Sorry to tell you that this site is classic group think, cloaked in very cool us, locus Seattle, interesting, but folks here are totally invested in Obama and don't want any comments to side track their dreascape.
That is OK, just have to know this sow ear will not become silk, and tons of lipstick bought at Goowill only works late at night, in the alley.
Posted by Ida | September 11, 2008 8:35 AMIda, could you define groupthink for us? That word seems so popular with trolls and contrarians, lately, I'd like to see if you actually know what it means.
Posted by Greg | September 11, 2008 8:42 AMLarry@24: You know some really dumb women.
Posted by DOUG. | September 11, 2008 8:46 AMLarry @24 - I'd like to introduce myself to you, just so that you can't say that anymore. No woman I know thinks that comment was sexist. IF, and we know that it wasn't, but even IF it were directed at Palin, it still wouldn't be sexist, just mean. It was just an experession, which the Republicans are now turning into a smokescreen to blind you from the very good point he was making.
And as far as I'm concerned, she is a pig in lipstick. She needs to clean up her own house before she moves into the White House. Seems her clan is lacking in family values.
