Yeah, I just wrote an email to Elisabeth Bumiller at the Times.

What a trashy hit piece. What are her sources? The Times is really scraping the barrel to get something on Palin. A 22 year old DWI in Alaska for her HUSBAND? Christ, people in Alaska don't drive drunk -- they live drunk. It's dark half the year, and there's not much to hit in your pickup...maybe you'd spin out and dent your camper shell...but that's about it.

Yes, post HRC, gone are the hoity-toity articles from the Op-Ed pages about "misogyny". Nothing but hatchet jobs from reporters bought and paid for by the Paper of Record.

This article is just laying the ground work for McCain to back off Palin when the hammer actually falls, and go with one of his other two choices. Which is too bad. Palin is a fucking albatross and Lieberman might actually bring enough conservative Clinton Democrats with him to upset the election.

Lieberman is a boring bag of gas. He and Biden should run off together and get married...they could discuss "policy" at breakfast for the next 2 billion years.

Poor Bailo is upset. Perhaps you should spend your time helping your candidates win instead of posting on SLOG. You won't have any converts here.

Much is being made of the fact that Palin is the governor of the "largest state," conveniently omitting "by area." But here are some stats comparing Alaska to Seattle:

Population
Alaska: 683,478 (2007)
Seattle: 563,374 (2000)
Revenue
Alaska: $12.3 billion (2007, including $5.2 billion from oil)
Seattle: $3.7 billion
State/Local Employees
Alaska: 51,720 (2006)
Seattle: 281,6000 (2007)
Firefighters
Alaska: 671 (2005)
Seattle: 1,030 (2006)
Violent Crimes
Alaska: 4,194 (2005)
Seattle: 4,109 (2005)

It seems to me, even as governor of Alaska, Palin is essentially a glorified mayor, and that the mayor of nearly any major city in the United States has as much if not more "executive experience" than Palin.

Do we want a glorified mayor one heart attack away from the presidency?

Here's the script... Bimbo gets nominated, then bows out within 10 days.

Tom Ridge is the running mate.

Gives me a really warm feeling knowing how our beloved Maverick Senator McCain is the bitch of the fundie flat-earth crowd.

@7: Right, and how big is Delaware?

And basically it's all run by the duPonts anyway..."Senator" Biden is no more than a butler to the chemical heirs.

@8:

More likely scenario: America decides it LOVES SARAH PALIN and we end up with a McCain landslide in November.

@7 convinced me that Greg Nickels should be McCain's next running mate.

I'm hearing that Palin will withdraw tomorrow and be replaced with either Harriett Myers, Alberto Gonzales, or Huckuvajob Brownie (who did NOT eff-up Gustav, I might add!)

@9: At least Biden has only 30 or so years dealing with foreign policy compared Palin's foreign policy experience in dealing with the lower 48 over the past couple of years. I bet she's spent the bulk of that time at Sea-Tac changing planes.

I love it Skippy John writes "People in Alaska don't drive drunk - they live drunk." Great that is all we need in this country - an alcoholic vp for things to become more fucked up than they are. Oh, and by they way, before you throw out charges of hit pieces please tell us - what are your sources? Huh? Sean Hannity? Fox?

Well, four years of Palin Place would at least make for good television.

Johnny B may think America will love Palin, but she didn't always love America. She was a member of the Alaska Independence Party! Secessionists!

The NYT has an obvious leftist agenda, so this story can be dismissed without being read. Sarah Palin is a great Chrisitan Patriot who along with John McCain vwill save America from liberalism and a certain civil war.

Astonishingly, I found out tonight that Palin graduated from the University of Idaho in 1987 with a bachelor's in communications.
I grew up in Moscow, Idaho (from '74 to '98) where the University is located. The late 80's at the UofI were notorious for rampant partying, raping, horribly lethal drunk driving (Idaho drinking age was 19 up until 1986, or 1987--can't quite remember when it changed, but I do remember my oldest brother being grandfathered into the change--WSU was, and is 7 miles away with a 21 yr drinking age...)and many other wacky, non-Christian things.
Anyway, Moscow was an insane place at that time, and my personal prejudices (as well as personal experiences with a variety of media related boards and councils at the university) translate "communications major" to "over-priviliged sorority girl with no sense of reality".
I kinda want to call up my brother right now and ask if he dealt any pot to Palin out of his sweet operation at his fraternity...

What kills me is that the idea that the GOP would rule out better-qualified candidates because they were "too predictable," as if they were TV execs instead of politicians concerned with the good of this country. But they've always been better at putting on The Government Show than actually governing, so perhaps it's not surprising.

"Christ, people in Alaska don't drive drunk -- they live drunk. It's dark half the year, and there's not much to hit in your pickup...maybe you'd spin out and dent your camper shell...but that's about it."

Which side are you arguing here? A state full of drunks is not viewed as a strength by the functional part of the world.

You all are living in drama land. Palin is it - Mavericks and pro life corruption fighters unite.

Evangelical have bonded with Palin - they are 100 per cent aboard with Mc Cain now. And the women of the far right are making her to be the perfect family mom, beset with problems, but not using abortion.

NRA loves her with all its money and lists.

Her nomination shook up the Mc Cain campaign, screwed Obama's bump and has now enjoyed a long list/days of media sucess.

The campaign in now about abortion in the swing states, Mc Cain's issue.

Obama can do nothing but disavow folks like you all ... sad.

If you read around, Palin had a little lobby effort going for the job .. the only one... and Mc Cain contacts with her via staff go back 6 weeks.

Mc Cain has great instincts it seems to shake thing off stale, grab the friendly media, and solidify his real supporters.

He will not under any circmstance dump her.

To please who? Liberal bloggers in Seattle, NYC and SFO, huh, don't be so simple.

Now that they, Mc Cain's councils, have so skillfully played the abortion card, when the war card?

Note - gas prices are falling.

I'm with @8 - my money specifically is on her withdrawing to spend time with her family "at this difficult time". It's perfectly set up for that.

And, @18, as for the NYT being a liberal rag - that story is important. It explains why McCain's VP candidate looks for all the world like she was pulled out of a hat... she was. The NYT is an actual world-class newspaper... hannity.com not so much.
