The Emmy Awards Dare You to Watch
So last night brought the 4,086th primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, which was long and weird and boring.
There were definitely bright spots, most notably the triumph of Tina Fey and 30 Rock. (Confidential to Alec Baldwin: Praising Tina Fey as “the Elaine May of her generation” is neither complimentary nor factually accurate. Tina Fey became the Elaine May of her generation 10 years ago, and now she’s something else all her own. The nearest precedent: Mary Tyler Moore, if Mary Tyler Moore had created and written The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which is a huge “if.” Also, this (great) New Yorker profile makes you look insane.)
But all this pales in comparison to the deeply unfortunate, extraordinarily long TV-theme medley performed by nouveau crooner Josh Groban.
Groban is a monster, but it must be said that he’s trapped in a no-win situation. Performing a quick-cut TV-show medley is like giving a speech in Klingon: There’s no way to do it and not look stupid, and the “better” you are at it, the stupider you look.
Suicide is painless, indeed.

he's actually pretty good. yeah, it's a ridiculous routine, but he's obviously talented. and brave. very brave.
Posted by ellarosa | September 22, 2008 10:12 AMUntil last night, I'd successfully avoided Josh Groban and his music. Is he always that bad?
I like Tina Fey and 30 Rock, and I'm glad they were winners, but a TV-award-giving body that ignores The Wire lacks credibility, to say the least.
Posted by LDP in Cincinnati | September 22, 2008 10:12 AMMaybe if he'd performed the medley in Klingon...
Posted by flamingbanjo | September 22, 2008 10:13 AMOuch. That Groban medley was painful to watch.
Posted by Timothy | September 22, 2008 10:19 AMThat Alec Baldwin profile made me incredibly sad.
Posted by SDizzle | September 22, 2008 10:27 AMJosh Groban is so very much better than this live musical abortion.
Posted by Greg | September 22, 2008 10:31 AMI thought Groban handled it pretty well, all things considered. Could've been much worse.
Posted by frank | September 22, 2008 10:37 AMI thought it was the highlight of the show. Well, that, and finding out that JoAnne Worley is still alive.
Posted by Angel in Indy | September 22, 2008 11:06 AMGroban has a great voice, it is unfortunate what he chooses to do with it.
Posted by inkweary | September 22, 2008 11:30 AMThe South Park bit was the worst of the bunch, but besides that it was pretty fun to watch, especially considering the shows were (mostly) the old classics, not the new crap (notable exception: 2.5 Men, unwatchable at any frequency).
It was weird seeing policemen chase a bunch of black women in robes off the stage though.
Posted by Ryan | September 22, 2008 11:37 AMGroban is a hack who has somehow convinced most of America that wildly undulating vibrato equals talent.
Posted by Nixor | September 22, 2008 12:15 PMI dislike Josh Groban, but sadly, he was one of the few things that kept me awake...the five hosts thing was extremely painful and I'm guessing Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel have just doomed their chances to ever be nominated, let alone actually win...but Jeff Probst was a classy winner and smart enough to acknowledge that the 5 hosts thing was a bomb and he proved he was the best choice to win for best reality host.
Also, he has a big penis that may or may not be photoshopped.
Also, what can we do to prevent Jeremy Piven and The Amazing Race from ever winning another Emmy? I like Piven and love TAR but what's the point in giving them the fucking Emmy every fucking year?
