The Dumbest VP Candidate Since Dan Quayle

First Broken-Watergate and now this.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

“We are a state’s rights party,” says Clark, a self-employed goldminer. The AIP has “a plank that challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote as illegal and in violation of United Nations charter and international law.”

Coming from a family of southerners, I learned early on that “state’s rights” is code for opposition of integration and abortion.

Two questions:

1) What the fuck is wrong with McCain that he can’t vet a veep properly?

2) What the fuck is wrong with Palin that she thought she could get away with this crap? Secret kids and kids-having-kids and membership in a weird political party? This is the aughts, friend—the internet is everywhere and you can’t hide this shit. Why wouldn’t she have brought these issues up in her vetting interview and given the RNC a strategy for dealing?

Because she’s a fucking moron. And a fucking moron shouldn’t be a heartbeat away from—or anywhere near—the presidency.

What, me worry?

Brendan, you should be more careful in criticizing a Vagina-American. Show some compassion!

Is she done yet?

I'd like to know why anyone thinks she's fit to govern our country when she can't even control her daughter's vagina.

With each hour, I love Pailin even more. She is really turning out to be a great gift to the Dems. You would have to be a fucking moron to support the McCain/Pailin ticket.

I can hardly wait to hear what unfolds next. Methlab in the basement? Topless photos from college years? Threesome in an igloo, caught on tape?

Bring it, Republicans. The whole world is watching.

Prediction: once Gustav dies, and the mainstream TV news outlets finally have time to catch up with the buckets of Palin mess churning on teh internets, the McCain camp will dump her in three weeks and replace her.

Yet, another historical political event this year. There is just too much queing up in the Palin Skeletorial Closet that will alienate both Republican voters and the almost-urban-legend Hilary-swing-vag-voters.

The already-fractive GOPs would find a way to bend the convention charter to make this retroactively happen with a VP they can all get behind.

And I think the important lesson is, it's okay to disqualify politicians you don't like based on their families, as long as you scream bloody murder when it happens to politicians you do like.

And if states' rights is code for slavery, does that mean in favor of birth control makes you a crypto-eguencisit, Sweden-style?

You guys are being so dumb. So her kid had a kid that she pretended was her kid. And she once was an independent who pushed states rights. Who cares? Why don't you show me the faults with her ideas and actions (and not troopergate) instead of shooting off these childish potshots at her personal life.

Alaska is a welfare state in the worst sense of the term.

Oil/gas tax revenues and the highest per capita federal expenditures support the lifestyle and welfare of every citizen in this state. Each year every Alaska resident receives a check from the Alaska Permanent Fund. This amounts to well over $2000 per person on a yearly basis. A family of six will likely receive close to $20,000 this year in dividends and fuel support payments.

If you want to understand Palin you have to drill down and understand Alaska. In a lot of respects it is a small town whose rural population is smaller than Seattle's in size. People like to talk.

I bet now the lame-ass Republicans will say something like "well we tried to put a woman candidate, but they just aren't fit for this kind of important job"...and put up an another old white guy for VP. One that is even older and whiter than McCain...if that's possible.

Please remember: there are a lot of fucking morons in this country, who will see Palin as a "good ol' gurl" with integrity - I wouldn't underestimate the GOP yet. (I don't think she herself is a moron - at least not on the same level as W.)

The AIP membership only highlights the maverick trope McCain is desperately trying to hype. Plus from what I remember of my Alaskan days, a lot of AIP people want to secede from the US because the federal gov't controls huge areas of land that could be drilled/mined/exploited in other ways; Palin is totally on board with that agenda.

I think she will poll well with people in the South; there is some weird cultural link between the South and southern Alaska, esp. Wasilla, where Palin is from.

Fuck, I was going to visit my parents next month but now I don't know if I can bear to be in Wasilla for a week. It's going to be all Palin, all the time. It was already too country for me before.

Can we please get the following tv ad on across the nation right now:

"John McCain is questioning Barack Obama's patriotism, but his running mate doesn't even want to be an American."

Two sorts of people live in Alaska: those that were born there, and those running from somewhere else. She wasn't born there.

In 1972, George McGovern's running mate Thomas Eagleton resigned from the ticket after 18 days. (The revelation in his case was that Eagleton had received electro-shock therapy for depression.)

Anybody want to bet that Palin won't last that long? She's made quite an impression in only three days.

I think it was all planned.

First, pick some out of left field candidate the morning after Obama's big speech to steal the media attention.

Check.

Then, knowing her kid is knocked up, release the info and pretty much dare some lefty/dem to start bad mouthing her.

If one takes the bait, the Repubs can say "look how those heartless liberals go after a poor misguided kid." Which sets her fam up as wonderfully sympathetic figures.

If no one bites they simply let her "withdraw due to family reasons" in a week and put up whoever they wanted originally. Either way it still looks like the lib media are a bunch of asses that forced her out of the race.

Then a couple weeks of spin and no one will even remember who Palin was. Sweet sweet Rove.

Now we've seen the results of McCain's shoot-from-the-hip style of decision making. Good one, John.

I have to disagree with 21.

This is all about ego and who pulls the strings in the Republican party. Mr. Faux
Maverick...McCain...caved to the interests and demands of the GOP base. Palin was a very strange choice to make considering there was apparently little to no vetting of her. All Alaskans were taken by complete surprise of her veep nomination. Alaska is such a terribly small state in terms of population and it wouldn't have taken very long for residents to learn Palin was being vetted. This was shoot-from-the-hip by McCain, and should be an incredible Red Flag warning regarding his capabilities and judgement. The GOP is likely going to be in damage control for the next several days,
and it is going to look bad during a time that should be a four day advertisement of its nominations and a celebration of the party. It might be justified to blame Rove for a number of issues, however I seriously doubt he should be given credit for this one.

Brendan, how have you made the case here that Palin is a "moron" -- not someone you disagree with but someone who is just dumb? Even to an Obama supporter like myself, your post looks shallow and pointless. Or just emoting. You can do better, right?

She's a fucking moron for not having brought all this shit up in the vetting interview and giving the GOP a strategy for damage control. As it is, she's left her party back on its heels and scrambling. Once Gustav loses public interest, it'll be all Palin—and how she left her party twisting in the wind.

That's what makes her a fucking moron.

Beauty pageants are one of the most sexist things I can think of, and I refuse to take anyone who participates in them seriously, even if it was many years ago.

there's also this--

here's McCain's selection for the Vice Presidency of the United States, Sarah Palin, answering a 2006 policy questionnaire:

Q: Are you offended by the phrase "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

PALIN: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me.

the poa was first introduced in 1942. the part about "under god" didn't happen until 1954. bimbo.

Well, if the best that you lot can come up with is calling her a "moron," then she's a good pick, since that's the all-purpose liberal default insult.

So Bristol is having a baby out of wedlock? It's touching to hear liberals suddenly concerned about that institution. It might bother me if Bristol was the one that was up for elective office, and not her mother.

This is just like the bumf about Cindy McCain's father. Was he a crook? Maybe and maybe not, but he's not the one we're voting for. The fact that Barack Obama's father was bigamously married to his mother doesn't seem to deter anyone, and it shouldn't.

Posted by Seajay | September 2, 2008 11:33 AM

hey seajay, bristol's unwed status is actually less alarming than the fact that she's still in high school, wouldn't you agree? and yes, bristol isn't an important issue.

but her mother is an unqualified bimbo, and there's ample evidence of that. so, if we don't use the word "moron" to describe her, then it's ok? just checking.

@21 Since Obama's poll numbers just broke 50% for the first time, I guess the latest genius plan isn't working so well for the Republicans.

I can't believe some people still don't realize that there is no such thing as a Republican genius. If they were a genius, they'd be smart and they wouldn't be a Republican. They're just bullies, kids, pure and simple. And they love it when they bully you into overestimating them and fearing their fictional superiority.

Sure, Ellarosa, calling Sarah Palin a bimbo is okay, if you want to talk about looks.

But surely the battles that feminists have fought for the last fifty years were all about moving beyond judging a woman by her looks?

Or do we get to judge them by their looks, but only if they're younger than Hillary Clinton?
