Oil/gas tax revenues and the highest per capita federal expenditures support the lifestyle and welfare of every citizen in this state. Each year every Alaska resident receives a check from the Alaska Permanent Fund. This amounts to well over $2000 per person on a yearly basis. A family of six will likely receive close to $20,000 this year in dividends and fuel support payments.

If you want to understand Palin you have to drill down and understand Alaska. In a lot of respects it is a small town whose rural population is smaller than Seattle's in size. People like to talk.

The AIP membership only highlights the maverick trope McCain is desperately trying to hype. Plus from what I remember of my Alaskan days, a lot of AIP people want to secede from the US because the federal gov't controls huge areas of land that could be drilled/mined/exploited in other ways; Palin is totally on board with that agenda.

I think she will poll well with people in the South; there is some weird cultural link between the South and southern Alaska, esp. Wasilla, where Palin is from.

Then, knowing her kid is knocked up, release the info and pretty much dare some lefty/dem to start bad mouthing her.

If one takes the bait, the Repubs can say "look how those heartless liberals go after a poor misguided kid." Which sets her fam up as wonderfully sympathetic figures.

If no one bites they simply let her "withdraw due to family reasons" in a week and put up whoever they wanted originally. Either way it still looks like the lib media are a bunch of asses that forced her out of the race.

Maverick...McCain...caved to the interests and demands of the GOP base. Palin was a very strange choice to make considering there was apparently little to no vetting of her. All Alaskans were taken by complete surprise of her veep nomination. Alaska is such a terribly small state in terms of population and it wouldn't have taken very long for residents to learn Palin was being vetted. This was shoot-from-the-hip by McCain, and should be an incredible Red Flag warning regarding his capabilities and judgement. The GOP is likely going to be in damage control for the next several days,
and it is going to look bad during a time that should be a four day advertisement of its nominations and a celebration of the party. It might be justified to blame Rove for a number of issues, however I seriously doubt he should be given credit for this one.

I can't believe some people still don't realize that there is no such thing as a Republican genius. If they were a genius, they'd be smart and they wouldn't be a Republican. They're just bullies, kids, pure and simple. And they love it when they bully you into overestimating them and fearing their fictional superiority.
