Slog - Comments on The Cuts at the Frye

On Wednesday night I posted a quick note about the Frye Art Museum's elimination of the education programs of Yoko Ott. Now I have the full story. Facing a potential deficit of $266,000 on a $4 million annual operating budget, the Frye announced to Ott and to the rest of the museum staff on Wednesday that Ott's position, manager of youth and community outreach, would have to be cut (and Ott's programs shut down) in order to balance the budget. The decision was not a reflection of Ott's performance on the job, said museum director Midge Bowman. "We sweated over...

This is a terrible shame. I agree that they need to start charging a "suggested" donation. If you can't pay, that's fine you still get to view the art, but perhaps a suggested donation will nudge those who can afford to pay into throwing at least a couple of dollars (if not more) in.

I'm sure you will keep us posted on their fundraising efforts so those of us who are able to contribute can.

The budget cuts were a tough reality for the Frye, and it couldn't have been a feel-good decision. I know Robin has been incredibly supportive and enthusiastic of this program and its mission, so maybe what's most disheartening (and the obvious and tired thought) is this had to happen in a city that is still so deep with wealth. Regardless, Yoko demonstrated great faith in her teaching artists. They were given freedom to work with their strengths and explore concepts relevant to their own work. This type of freedom in teaching can be quite rare for artists. I greatly valued this opportunity.

It runs on income from warehouses??? Wow.

At any rate, as sad as all this sounds, Ott is apparently a highly rgarded and innovative professional -- here's hoping she lands on all fours quickly.

I interned with Yoko over the last seven months, helping with many of the programs mentioned above. I can honestly say that I would not have ever gotten involved with the Frye if not for hearing Yoko speak about art education at tuesday morning Klatch. I have had countless invaluable conversations with her in regards to these issues and many more and I am certain that her work continue to be invaluable in the Seattle arts community wherever she ends up.
