Chow The Apple War

onI say Honeycrisps are the best apple ever, Bethany says they’re too sweet. Commenters seem torn between Fuji’s and Galas. Instead of fighting, let’s make it official (per commenter Julie’s suggestion) and have a poll:
I am the best kind of apple ever. I am:

Really? Granny Smith? Gross.
Honeycrisps are the best of the lot that you've given, but you've not given us the option of Pink Ladies - the winey back-yard flavor of a honeycrisp, but with a beguiling sour tang, and the best apple in the universe.
I work in a produce department and Honeycrisp are definitely the most popular. But they are too damned tart for me. Braeburn is the go to, but wheres Pink Lady on your poll. Thats my favorite. I'll have to vote Jazz. PS organic honeycrisp just came in, from Nova Scotia by the way, and they're 4.49 a pound. That is outrageous. And the early 2009 non organics will be bigger than softballs.
Pink Lady! they're the best.
I'm one of the minority to vote Golden Delicious, but my true favorites are those tart, small apples from old-fashioned trees like we had in my backyard growing up. Someone down my street has one, and I steal one every time I walk by. There's nothing like it in the supermarket.
I third Pink Ladies. Not only do they have the perfect balance of sweet and tangy, but they also have an adorable name.
I'm @4: Where's Pink Lady?! Wake up, sheeple!
PINK LADY!
Where's the Macintosh?
Pink Ladies Rule!
I believe the well balanced tartness and sweet taste of the Pink Lady apple along with its never mealy texture makes it deserving of a place in this poll.
WHERE ARE MY PINK LADIES!!!??? HOW COULD YOU HAVE LEFT THEM OFF THE LIST!!!
RE-DO!!!
No Cameo? They're far better than Granny Smiths or Red Delicious. Too bad Macouns aren't common up here...they are yummy.
I concur with 9. McIntosh, people!
No love for Cameo?
So I guess I'd better accept the fact that I'm the only person in the state who knows Ida Reds, never mind likes them.
Well ok then...
what, no grapple? I'd think you'd be all over that Megan.
Pink Lady, that's it! That's the one I was trying to think of. My vote changes to Pink Lady as well (I was Honeycrisp).
Red delicious, who voted for red delicious? Do you have taste buds???? Sure, maybe a long time ago before they were engineered into marvels of modern long term storage they were good, but now they are mealy, flavorless, cheap apples that give the rest of the apple bunch a bad name.
i thought this was gonna be about computers...
Since I don't see "Obama" or "McCain," I will be fair and only vote once, instead of 400-500 times. I voted Honeycrisp.
The sweetness issue is kinda silly, sure maybe if you're going to bite into the thing whole, but only rubes and neophytes do that. Cut them into slices and pair them with a contrasting cheese or some walnuts, and crisp white wine with a lightish floral finish. natch.
Best BAKING apple is the gravenstein. Eating - got to go with the Pinks as well.
Pink Ladies! The best, the best, THE BEST!
My mother-in-law swears by the sekai-ichi. I prefer a tart variant myself.
I'd like to vote Pacific Rose but it is not on the list.
Where is the Gravenstein???
McIntosh or Cortland
(didn't vote in this poll)
I am a:
BAD APPLE!
I've heard that red Delicious are edible on the East Coast. They certainly aren't around here -- I've heard them compared to styrofoam, only slightly less sexy.
Pink Lady FTW. Also, best apple name.
I vote Pink Lady too.
American Spirit Menthols are better than any fuckin' apple and twice as delicious.
Moi aussi--Pink Lady! How could you skip over such a crucial apple in this poll?
I truly love living in apple country.
Honeycrips taste like Granny Smith's ASS. Fuji or nothing.
I voted, but I would have rather tried them all in succession AND THEN voted.
PINK LADY! why is it not there? clearly this is a mistake!
Pink lady..the best!
Black Oxford: http://www.fedcoseeds.com/trees/apples/oxford.htm
I buy mine at the Broadway Farmer's Market from Jones Creek, but they're not around for very long.
apples are not as good as FUCKING YAKIMA PEACHES.
Pink Ladies are nice. But only until the Honeycrisps roll in, dammit.
@40:
Cafe Flora has a BBQ peach sandwich on their lunch (not sure about dinner) menu right now that is so good I almost cried.
PINK LADY BITCHES
OMFG PINK LADY! They also win for dirtiest name.
I suspect that the Red Delicious Growers' Marketing Association has been stuffing the ballot box. How else to explain a vote as high as 4% for the most deceptively named apple ever?
No Duchess? Fuck you, commie queer.
When it's on, and I mean really on--when the crisp IS crisp, and the honey is just above sweet, then Honeycrisp. The Pink Lady is almost there, yet too often mealy.
FUJI APPLES REIGN SUPREME
ALL OTHER APPLES ARE INFERIOR TO THE GREAT FUJI
EAT A FUJI, AND KNOW THY PERFECTION
FUJI
FUJI
FUJI
FUJI
FUJI
FUJI
I want a Comice goddamn pear.
dammn. Pink lady won on a write in ballot. Slog, you fucked up!
Pink lady!!!!
Pink Lady fools!
Tsugaru apples from Anderson Acres in Yakima. They're so good I planted my own tree.
i baked some pink ladies whole last fall and it was a syrupy revelation.. just popped four in the oven at 325 degrees for almost and hour and that was it. fragrant honeyed delight almost good as pie, except without the crust. i never could make a decent pie crust....
+1 cameo.
Pink ladies.
Winesaps pls kthxbai.
Winesaps pls
No shit.
I voted Red Delicious as a proxy for the one I really wanted, kinda like every President I ever voted for.
i'm also in the pink lady camp - wins for taste, texture, beauty and pop culture reference.
I am apple: pie.
you did this last year. are you going to do this every year? originality is running a little low i see. weak.
Pink Lady, yum in my mouth
One bad apple don't spoil the whole buncha girls, I don't care what they say, I don't care what you've heard!
You need to include a joke option for people who never eat apples.
Winesaps are awesome. I miss York apples, which I got when I lived in South Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.
#5 -- right now, I'm enjoying Chestnut Crabs (tiny apples, about the size of golf balls) at the Farmers' Market in St. Paul.
You left off the Pink Lady - the obviously superior apple.
The best apple is the Macoun. Doesn't travel well. Doesn't keep well. Can't get them around here, but damn, they're tasty.
Your list is woefully incomplete. What about Belle de Boskoop? Also, how can you evaluate the quality of an apple without any context?
If you want to taste a multitude of apple varieties, go down to Raintree Nursery in Morton next time they have one of their fruit tasting events. The next one is on Saturday, September 13th.

Ooh, baking the Pink Ladies might make them even more my favoritest...
Pink Ladies!
One more for the Pink Lady camp -- but also, much more rarely, the Ambrosia. Just as delicious as you'd hope from the name.
I go with the Gravensteins...but agree with others that no list of possible best apples should include Delicious or exclude Pink Ladies.
@56: Seconded. Winesap! This poll is meaningless sans the winesap.
Macouns when I lived on the east coast; Cameos now that I can't get Macouns.
A hard and tart Macintosh is pretty killer, but I haven't had one of those in many years.
Otherwise, I find the New Zealand Braeburns the most consistently good. Washington Braeburns are never as good as the imported ones. Good texture. Sweet, but tart too.
I like the Granny Smith too.
I like crisp, tart apples.
I'm coming into this way too late in the game, but what about Haralsons? Perfectly tart and heaven in a pie, crisp, or turnovers. I do like Honeycrisp too though... I have a Honeycrisp tree in my yard.
juice from generic concentrate
Rome apple. The only way to go. Too bad its season is so damn short.
Pink Ladies, or the terrorists win.
midwaypete is right - winesaps rock all day and all night. But no winesaps out here :-( Given that, honeycrisps rule: they taste just like Halloween - srsly.
Last week a friend of mine from college moved to Vashon Island. As I was helping move him and his family into their new home I went out back to pick some apples- yes they have fruit trees on their rental property! There is a type of apple there with a name that is probably long sense forgotten. I had never tasted it before. You see, as you pick it you leave a bruise on the fruit. That's how soft they are, so of course I have never seen one of these in a supermarket before. It is also one of the best fucking apples that I have ever eaten in my life. I think I ate about 8 of them that afternoon. Simply wonderful.
Count me another voice for the Pink Lady!
